Surely the whole point of a player thread is to highlight good and bad. It was a poor piece of keeping by anyone’s standard. Not sure there can be much debate that Hugo has had a sub par season. Imo he gets far too much leeway. If this was his first season he’d now be in same bracket of judgement as Aurier. Some good stuff but also some very bad stuff. To say I have an agenda is ridiculous. I want everyone of our players to have a great World Cup. But I’m not going too shy away from criticising Hugo just because some people think he has a free pass.

Not sure the "point" of a player thread is for "supporters" to highlight the good and the bad.

I certainly understand in a match thread, when, in the heat of the moment, emotions and frustrations can run high. I mean, who among us has not said "FFS Dele" at least a half-dozen times a match?

But, you came in here after Lloris let in a goal while playing in a WC tune-up for France. It had no impact on Spurs. You described it as a "Howler" - which should be reserved for the most egregious errors. I'd classify the mistake he made against Sweden last summer as a "howler". This, however, was a simple mistake. He got caught off-guard by the pace of the shot from behind the wall, did well to stop the shot, but allowed the rebound to stay in front of the goal. Yes, that was a mistake, and it resulted in a goal. In retrospect, Lloris should have punched the ball clear - but in the time he had to make that decision - he opted just to block the shot, and then could not recover the ball.

If Bonucci was not in that spot, or if a defender clears the ball, it simply goes down as a save on the free kick, and nobody thinks more about it. Bonucci scores, so it was a mistake - just not a howler.

And, if you came in here and said: "Lloris just conceded a soft goal" you probably would have gotten a number of "agrees". By, calling it a "howler" you demonstrated a bias in overstating the magnitude of the mistake.

And, while no player is above criticism - Lloris included - I personally, hold him in very high regard for his role in keeping the team together during the transition from AVB/Sherwood to Poch. His professionalism and loyalty as a veteran player was the glue that held the squad together as we transitioned out some bad apples, and allowed the younger players to fill the void. Lloris had several opportunities to abandon the project - but he remained, and his calm leadership is a big reason for why we still have many of our key players. So, I give him a lot of leeway, before publicly bashing him when he concedes a soft goal (or fails to cover the near post...), even for Spurs.

Indeed, I support Spurs, and while I do get frustrated at times - when it impacts Spurs - I don't go out of my way to bash the players for any reason - and running in here to report that "Lloris just had a howler" in an international match, is bashing, just for the sake of bashing - imo.

I won’t deny I currently have concerns over Lloris as a “goalkeeper” because that’s what he is. And that’s how I will judge him not as some kind of ambassador for the club. Unquestionably he’s been a great servant and had fantastic periods for us. But if we want to challenge for a title I just don’t believe he is now good enough. So if you want to call my opinion an agenda that’s up to you. My opinion is that he will be France weak link at the world. Nothing would give me more pleasure than to be proved wrong. Obviously if I have an opinion that he is no longer good enough I will highlight his mistakes if I believe that reinforces my point. There’s a big difference between having an opinion and having an agenda.

But... will you also give praise when it's due?
I can understand that you think he's no longer good enough, that's your opinion then fine, but just that it's not mine.
ATM you just seem to show up any negative about him. It seems a bit too "one sided" in favour of error.

Bold part 1: Except you don't highlight the good and bad. You clearly follow the thread, yet a page that is full of praise, after 2 separate games, over the space of several days and you were nowhere to be seen. Suddenly, Lloris accidentally forgets to tie a double knot in his boot laces and you appear out of nowhere to lambaste him for it.

Bold part 2: No shit.

In retrospect “howler” was a tad OTT ?. Let’s see what sort of World Cup he has. If it’s not Harry lifting it there’s nobody I’d rather than Hugo.

Was that a howler? Slight deflection through the legs. I just don’t know enough about specific keeper expectations but I have been a little worried about Hugo this past season. He does bring positive energy though to the team.

He has made a number of really bad errors for France over the past year. Another one tonight ....

?

Some random hammered it perfectly through the defender's legs on the turn into the bottom corner with Hugo not having any view of the ball until it reached him. No idea how that is being classed as a howler.

Not at all. I was poking fun at coys200 as every time lloris gives up a goal he says it's a howler.

It really bugs me when people say that if a keeper is beaten at his near post he's at fault for the goal. It's absolute rubbish which is perpetuated by lazy commentators who have no experience or understanding of playing in goal.

Lloris was completely blameless for the goal tonight and if anyone made a mistake it was the defender and his shocking attempt to play the ball.
