It really bugs me when people say that if a keeper is beaten at his near post he's at fault for the goal. It's absolute rubbish which is perpetuated by lazy commentators who have no experience or understanding of playing in goal.

Lloris was completely blameless for the goal tonight and if anyone made a mistake it was the defender and his shocking attempt to play the ball.
Defender absolutely to blame for the goal - horrendous touch that led to the shot.

That said, Lloris should not have been beaten to the near post on this shot. Generally speaking, Keeper has responsibility for near post, while defenders help out on covering the far post shots - which the defender generally did in this case - despite giving up the ball, there was no clean angle to the far post.

The shot in this case did take a deflection - which is always tough to adjust for - but it came off the defender's inside leg - meaning it made the angle of the slight slightly wider (as opposed to narrower towards the post), and in reality had little bearing on the shot location.

Its a goal. Its not a howler, and I don't think I would even classify it as a mistake. Its just a shot that Lloris should be saving - his reflexes are not what they used to be, and he will have to continue to adjust his positioning to accommodate - he either takes a step closer to the ball or a step closer to his near post.

Ridiculous.

A keeper has a whole goal to protect, why would you expect them to protect the near post and leave a huge gap for the striker to aim for? There was no defender protecting that side of the goal.

Strikersare often told to shoot across the keeper as that allows another player to get the loose ball. Therefore why not ensure you protect against that? The guy should never have been allowed to shoot form there when there are two defenders around him.

I played in goal, I’m not being lazy. I also didn’t use the word howler.

The mistake is Sidibé’s. Obviously. And the striker hits the ball cleanly sure. But the angle he’s at and with the goalkeeper’s positioning I think he should stop that. As one of the best keepers in the world.

Who is calling it a howler?

I was replying to a message that said "He has made a number of really bad errors for France over the past year. Another one tonight ...."

Maybe I mistranslated but I think it's harsh to call Hugo out for that one either way, and I was watching it with a bunch of French supporters.

It was shit defending at fault and a surprisingly top quality strike from no distance at all and straight through a defender's legs. Anyway, meh...

France (and I speak as a fan) have aspirations to win the WC. Lloris is a good enough keeper to play for the winning team but if we lose a semifinal because of a goal like the one against Sweden last year or Colombia this year or to a lesser extent the one last night - I will be pissed !

Im not hating on Lloris. I love him and he’s a great captain and top class keeper. He can have more 7/10 moments than most other world class keeers though ...

My biggest worry with Hugo is that his two biggest plus points are his reflex saves and his speed off the line. Obviously as we age those would probably be the first two things that start to decline. He’s not s keeper that can really rely on his ability to fill the goal, Hugo is all about being nimble and fast very much like the classic “cat” analogy for a keeper. I have no idea if this seasons patchy form is the start of a decline or just a dodgy season which I guess he was allowed. Anyways I guess we will find out over the next 12 months.

It was a poor goal to concede, from a defensive perspective. Sidibe's initial error created the chance and in my opinion Hugo should have done far better than he did, seems to have been the theme of his season.

He's obviously an incredible goalkeeper, backed to the hilt by Poch and apparently Deschamps too (which is good to see):

“Everyone will have their own analysis of Hugo’s season,” Deschamps said afterwards.
“Yes, he made three errors with Tottenham that cost goals – (but) he played 60 games, he also earned points for Tottenham, as he made points for the team of France.
“Tonight, obviously he knows it, he can do better on the goal that we conceded.
“But I’m not here to question everything. He has a long, painful season, he’s going to get on with it too.”

Good riposte to those who are tetchy about any criticism of Lloris.

Unsighted, deflection, velocity all factors. Plus the bounce - it's rising from the ground.

As mentioned above even The Best Goalkeeper in the World™ can't always get everything perfect.

Good performance from Hugo today. Not much work but was confident in everything. Had one great save from Tolisso touch.

Huge performance from Hugo. Wonder save at 1-0. As much of a match winning moment as either goal. Good to see him delivering on the big stage. I feel like he sometimes gets edgy in big games so will be huge for his confidence.
