Fortunately no need to rush him back - Wimmer doing an excellent job.
Indeed as Wimmer is man in possession hope Jan has to wait to get back in team.

Hopefully we will have a lot of games over the next couple of months. We'll need him.

Jan's good but I agree he has to win his place back now, and what a good thing for Spurs. It's likely he's still a bit better than Wimmer, and certainly in that most parsimonious CB partnership, but Big Kev's six years younger and only half a season into his PL career. I predict he'll be a mainstay for a decade.

Partly true but Spurs now only have 2 quality CB, plus DIer, to repy on - and all 3 will need breaks during - so Jan is indeed neeed, very much so.

We have ccv. He is very highly rated. I'd play him in one of the next 3 games to give toby a rest. Probably fiorentina next week. Hopefully we can get a good result this week.

I sgree Wimmer is a more than capable replacement but I would still like Verts back as soon as possible incase of injury to Wimmer or Toby.

Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen confirms return from injury by the end of March

Tottenham face a tough test at Fiorentina this evening, as they look for revenge against The Viola, for knocking them out of the Europa League last season.

Spurs are without goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and have not had Jan Vertonghen available since the 3-1 win at Crystal Palace in January.

Vertonghen picked up what looked to be a serious looking knee injury due to a clash with Connor Wickham that subsequently saw the Crystal Palace striker banned for three games.

On Thursday, Vertonghen updated on his injury and also touched upon his return date.

Speaking to the Spurs website, Vertonghen said: “I’m aiming to be back around the international break and I want to be part of the team and help however I can.”

The next international break is at the end of March. With international fixtures on March 26, 2016 and March 29, 2016.

As a result, Jan Vertonghen could be back for Spurs to play again at Liverpool on April 2, 2016.

In his absence, Kevin Wimmer has performed well alongside Toby Alderwereld.

Jan Vertonghen desperate to beat the clock in recovery from knee injury to bolster Tottenham's Premier League title bid
By Jack Bezants for MailOnline

Jan Vertonghen wants to beat the timeframe Tottenham medics have given him to return from his knee injury so he can bolster their Premier League title challenge.

The central defender damaged his medial collateral ligament in the 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace on January 23 and was expected to be out until the end of March.

But with Tottenham two points away from Premier League leaders Leicester, Vertonghen is desperate to get back on the field for Mauricio Pochettino's side.

'I want to be involved in those celebrations too,' Vertonghen said. 'I see them cheering in front of the away fans at City, I see them playing well at home to Watford or away at Norwich and it’s hard because, especially at times like this, you want to be a part of the team.'

Tottenham's next Premier League game is against Swansea at White Hart Lane on February 28.

If Vertonghen does not get back playing before the international break at the end of March, he would miss five Premier League games.

But the north London derby against title rivals Arsenal on March 5 is almost certainly too soon for the Belgian.

i do feel bad for him, he clearly can tell that something truly special is happening, and these sort of title challenging runs are what really matter and define players careers. Especially because he had to endure that awful avb/sherwood year.

Personally I think we miss him. The partnership with Toby, Dier and Lloris was exceptional and we have conceded more goals since.

Think Wimmer has done as well, if not better than what we had hoped and expected since he came into the team.

However I cannot wait for Jan to be back. He's one of our leaders on the pitch and there is much more calmness to our play when he's in the team. Having him back for Liverpool could prove vital.

Wimmer has done brilliant, but of course we have missed Vertonghen. If it wasnt for Wimmer`s quality, and we would have had to play a Kaboul or a Fazio, we would be crying right now.

I think Wimmer has been excellent, I don't think Jan will make much difference if I am honest in comparison, I think the real problem has been this week that our players haven't had much rest or rotation and the mental fatigue is getting to them and I think that's where Wimmer and Jan would be handy, if we could rotate the two it would keep them fresh, especially for a week like we have just had.

Our midfield protecting the back four as well, Dier has looked nowhere near his best this week because of fatigue and Mason hasn't been giving me any confidence from the bench, we simply don't have the quality of depth in that area to stay consistent and that's why it's imperative that the squad is managed perfectly.

I would not want to rely on Mason and Nabil for the run in, I don't think we can take any risks whatsoever I am not saying they are bad players, I just think they are more prone to error and it's imperative that the back four stays protected, that has been a key difference to us this year and one of the main reasons we haven't been dropping silly points like we did last year.

This season until his injury was one of his best seasons with us, I put that all down to Alderweireld who oozes class yet has that aggression needed. I think Wimmer is benefiting from him as well. It'll be great to have Vertonghen back but will he be straight back into the team?

Whilst defensively Wimmer has been excellent, I think we miss Verts carrying the ball out and getting things going. Its not going to happen, but Verts could easily play CDM if called upon to do so. IMO.

Wimmer has been awesome to be fair, to be put in like he has he's done brilliantly. I think it would be unfair to oust him and just put Jan right back in. Wimmers done nothing wrong.

Agree but there is a case to be argues that Wimmer is slightly the better defender
