SportBible are doing their best to get him banned retrospectively for an apparent strangle on Herreira that the cameras missed. They didn’t even show the clip on their site despite making a whole article on it.

I missed it but if anyone at Utd deserves to be strangled.......

We have a Barca level defender and no one seems to notice but Spurs fan. Long may it continue. His form this past two seasons is levels above even Toby's first season with us where he was immediately given a world class moniker.

Another absolute defensive masterclass from Jan today, in a tough and testing game.

He has been outstanding for us for a long time now, but has really stepped it up in the absence of Toby, when we really needed him.

My player of the season so far, hands down. Such a classy player and he’s been such a great servant to the Club over the years. Could even be captain, I’m sure he would be but for Lloris and Kane. It’s good to have so many candidates for the armband!

Vertonghen received offers from both Arsenal and Tottenham in the summer of 2012 but decided on the latter, costing around £12m from Ajax.

The Belgium international has established himself as one of Spurs’ key players, making 237 appearances for the club to date.

And ahead of today’s north London derby showdown with Arsenal, Vertonghen admits his career could have been very different had he joined the Gunners.

The 30-year-old told The Mirror: "It was as close as it can get.

“My agent went to Arsenal, I wasn't there myself but it was very respectful and in the end I had to make a choice and I chose Spurs.

“I chose Spurs and I think it's turned out well.

"I felt I was joining a great team, with great plans and the personal chats I had with people at Spurs were great.

“I followed my instinct, my gut feeling and that's it."

Vertonghen is yet to claim any silverware during his time at Tottenham, but the Belgian is confident they are close to ending their 10-year drought.

He added: "We've done very well, we're building a great team with the manager and the new stadium is coming up. I am very, very confident we will win a trophy very soon.

"You want to win trophies. I want to play in a cup final.

"Sometimes you need that trophy or a big win against a Real Madrid or top six side to realise how good you are.

"I am convinced that if you win one trophy, then the rest will follow.

“We are going to challenge for both (the FA Cup and Champions League) and then we are trying to finish in the top four, so we have three targets.

"This is what we are playing for and very confident we can keep it going."

Not exactly a shock transfer claim as it was reported at the time that Arsenal were interested.

The narrative at the time was Wenger wanted him in midfield whereas we wanted him in defence.

I thought Wenger wanted him to play as LB but he preferred to play as a LCB which was the position that we offered him.

Needs a new contract, would love to see him retire here and win something, would be the closest thing to a club legend and been easily our best CB since Ledley.

Vertonghen has been truly amazing and consistent over the last few seasons. This season he has martialed that backline and been a true leader. We all fret over losing Toby yet when we look deeper, Super Jan has been in imperious form and has been relatively injury free.

We are conceding more goals than the previous two seasons... Why ?
Walker’s gone, Rose hasnt been at his best since coming back from injury, a young inexperienced CB partnering Jan, Toby’s been injured for a while and is injured again, and Wanyama has been hurt all season.

Our most in form back line this season consists of Jan, Walker’s and Rose’s back ups and a young, inexperienced centerback. Now you tell me why we’re conceding more.

Probably my favorite Spurs player at the moment. Epitomises everything about a true professional player and is quickly becoming a legend, imo.
