Davinson Sanchez has opened the door for both Jan and Toby to exhibit their footballing skills again.

Given this licence you see how comfortable both are with the ball moving forward.

Best Defence I've ever seen at Spurs
Slightly off topic, though I agree with you that is so of recent years. Best defence imho was Beale, England, Knowles and kinnear.

When Wimmer deputised for Verts when he got injured he was fantastic. Over that period I certainly favoured Wimmer in the position irt to pure defending, he was doing a better job at the time imo. And I absolutely stick by that.

He's really in good form.

This is the difference. Verts has been in the best form ever for us imo in recent months and has cut out nearly all of the dicey stuff he and hugo made a habit of. His command of the position is now total and I hope it continues.

I still stand by Wimmer being a great defender and expect him to have a very good season at Stoke.

Verts going full boss is a win for us. No argument from me.

He'll become Belgium's most capped player this week. A great achievement.
Already? He's got at least another four years left at international level if he wants.

Great achievment and he'll probably set a record that will be hard to beat.

The most accurate cliche of all is "form is temporary, class is permanent"

He's always had class... Playing left back in his first season he was great

Then there was the slump. The form went for whatever reason and he wasn't great BUT still a class player. (By the way I remember quite a few posters on here suggesting we should get rid of him at the time)

Add Poch, Toby et al and the class shines through, Its great to see..

By the way TA's form has dipped but the class remains.... If he hits top form and Verts stays on it we are going to a seriously tough unit to break

It was probably the leaning on the tunnel wall away at Man City which did it.

However, watching that Spurs team was less exciting than gawping at a grown man lean on a wall, so I was all for it.

According to google Jan Ceulemans is Belgium's most capped player with 96 caps, our Jan has 87.

Maybe google's not as update as it should be? According to Goal and Martinez couple days ago, Jan currently has 95 caps.

The Tottenham defender is set to become his country's all-time leading appearance-maker, prompting Roberto Martinez to hail his leadership qualities

Roberto Martinez has hailed Jan Vertonghen as "sensational", with the Tottenham defender set to break the Belgium caps record at the age of 30.

Vertonghen is on 95 caps for his country ahead of Saturday's away World Cup qualifying game against Bosnia-Herzegovina and the home match against Cyprus on October 10.

Belgium's national record holder is Jan Ceulemans with 96, so the Spurs centre-back will equal and then break the record in this international break if he plays in both games.

At a time where Vincent Kompany's persistent injury woes continue to trouble the national team, the Manchester City defender having had to leave the squad, Martinez hailed Vertonghen's track record.

"There's been a lot of talk about this golden generation, but it's important we can have leadership and personality creating a team," the Belgium boss said, as quoted by Sky Sports.

"I think that's where Jan is essential. He's a leader, he's a really experienced head and that's important. We've got a few of those and they're going to guide the younger talent.

"To get 95 caps at this stage of his career is a sensational achievement. That just shows you the professionalism that he has."

Think his formed dipped during the AVB/ Sherwood period given the mess around the club and then post Poch he's just got better and better....seems directly correlated to his belief in the direction of the club and quality of team mates

Great talent but clearly was a point where he was frustrated with things a few years back that translated onto the pitch - don't blame him to be fair

Great he stuck with us and vice versa

Didn't he apparently hand in a transfer request when sherwood was manager. I'm sure that was the rumour at the time.

He really didn't need to play that game, Belgium qualified for the WC weeks ago.

Maybe it was personal.

He is now one of two players with the most caps for Belgium (96 caps). The other being Jan Ceulemans.

If he plays in their last qualifier, he will hold that record on his own.
