Because it’s highly unlikely he’ll get any worse in the next 3 or 4 years. He’s never relied on pace and reads the game better than most. When he’s out it’s very noticeable and he’s basically Mr Reliable. Unless he’s made it clear he won’t sign a new deal then I think we’re risking it a little. No immediate danger though but still surprising (for me) that it wasn’t a longer deal.
How many great 36 year old CB's have there been in the Prem in the last 5 or so years?

3 or 4 year deal would mean 34 or 35. I have no idea how many but I’d say Jan is the type of player who could easily play at the highest level at 34.

Didn’t Rio play at Man U until he was 36?

You wouldn’t buy a player that old but if he was already there like Jan is (as Rio was) then you keep them as long as possible in my opinion.

Purely from a business point of view why would you offer a player a contract to 35 when one you don’t have to and secondly he is starting to pick up injuries. I’d personally see where he is this time next year and if good maybe offer him another 2 years. But imo offering any player over 30, four or five years is madness unless in exceptional circumstances like a Ronaldo. I know not same level but West Ham gave Reid a crazy contract 5 or 6 years and he’s barely played since.

I think it was an one year option taken up on the existing contract which possibly means he doesn't get a wage increase?

Not sure how I feel about this. On one side im happy that he'll stay on a year longer, but does that mean he's free to go after? Rather have him sign on for three more years

I know he doesn't like playing left back, but he is really good there. His crossing is so much better than Rose & Davies in the same position, and the Bury Beckham from the other side today. Elegant player.

He and Toby are ridiculously good offensively for CBs. Its a big reason why they are such a special duo.

Our other fullbacks should hang their heads in shame that they can’t cross the ball as well as a centre back playing in their position.

I love Jan but by the time his deal finishes at the end of next season, he's 33. We should see how this season plays out, see what Pochettino's intentions are regarding him (as Sanchez looks very comfortable at LCB and at some point is going to be undoubted first choice in one of Jan or Toby's positions), see what happens with Toby this summer (who himself will be 31 when his current deal expires if he stays with us) and take it from there. I wouldn't expect him to get more than a 1 or 2 year extension, in fact a 1 year extension with an in built extension clause if he plays a certain amount of games would make most sense.

Question is, does Jan accept that, or does he want 4/5 years to see out his career?

You say centre back but both Toby and Jan have regularly played full back for Belgium. Our full backs however can’t cross for shit with the exception of KWP.... Tripps is overrated, doing what Walker used to do and pass the bloody ball sideways.

We will really miss him. The club must scout for the next left footed Vertonghen

No need for me to add to the numerous eulogies of Vertonghen but just wanted to drop in, say I love him, and retreat to another thread.
