This will be doing him the world of good. He's getting to be a bit of a conductor, lots of play seems to be running through him, he's making 1-2s, knitting moves together, getting to play centrally and take on responsibility. He's got enough under his belt of training and playing with class players, a bit of adversity, a struggling team and being a player that others look to to make something happen is exactly what he needs now to try and round of his character and experience more.

Im a fan of his, realistically if we want him to get to where we hope he can, then we must be looking at no more midfield incomings over the next year or two aside from a wide forward and maybe Barkley ( who it is debated might also cover Dembele.

Dembele, Winks, Barkley ( whilst also playing AM ) and Onumah for 1-2 spots in the middle depending on formation and tactics. If Onumah is to reach his potential, that kind of faith will have to be imparted upon him. Hopefully, this season will cause him to push on enough so that Poch believes he is ready, and he will show enough in training and game opportunities to work his way up that pecking order

Good post. I actually expect us to recall in him in January and send him to a PL team for the remainder of the season. Swansea could do with him, badly. I watched Renato Sanches play and he was abysmal for Swansea. Granted that was his debut in the PL, I still expected him to show some composure and pass the ball around. I think he gave the ball away 23 times and might have only had 5 successful passes.

Here a clip of every touch Renato Sanches had on his debut.

Welcome to the prem, kid.

He'll warm up when he gets used to the pace and intensity.

You can still tell in that video that there is good player in there. TBF composure and 'passing the ball around' are not and will never be major parts of Sanches' game. At his best, like in the Euro's its pure intensity, physicality and dynamism that sticks out.

Anyway back on Onomah, regardless of how Aston Villa are doing its good for him to get game time and experience different situations. You don't need to be at a club doing well to have a successful loan.

Some quotes from the Villa forum after this weekends 0-0

Plays most of the game like he just got out of bed and is going out for a morning stroll in the park. Needs to realise he isn't playing U23 football anymore.
Whereas the rest of the team need to realise they're playing football. At 20 he's our best midfielder in my opinion
like Davis, Bree, Green. I will give him a miss for having a bad game. He is young it will happen from time to time due to inconsistency

Lad probably had pick of Championship clubs and opted to play for us

Well, we seem to have broken him already. Even for us, that was quick
Watched the highlights only but anything good came from him it seems.

Big fan of Onomah's ability but the guy can't tackle for shit. I've watched a few of his Villa matches and not only is he generally pretty languid his actual attempts to track back and tackle are pitiful. I fully understand why Poch hasn't played him in CM for us yet as he would be a liability. I hope he does develop this side of his game as I do feel his skill set is perfect for a deeper midfield role. But at the moment he just doesn't seem to get it.

He has lots to learn and this loan even if Villa are poor can only be a good thing. Have to remember he's still only young but he needs to channel his aggression more!

Bit harsh. From the highlights it looks like he still had a decent game. Its the other players that aren't on his level.
that's my view too, he is surrounded by players who are well below our standard.

so when he comes back, he'll have attacking players making better runs etc.

I see what you're saying but it's hard to utilize those skills or be a threat when you keep losing the ball and can't pass to a teammate, especially as Renato is primarily a B2B mid. Again, he's a talented player and this is one game he'll sit back and learn from. As for Onomah, the loan seems to be helping his development. I heard we have a recall clause and would hope that we can activate it and secure him a PL loan come January.

We spoken to the Birmingham Mail's Aston Villa writer Gregg Evans to give us the inside track on what he makes of Onomah, what the fans think, and whether the youngster will have a future at Tottenham Hotspur:

How much of a chance has Joshua Onomah been given so far at Aston Villa?
"Onomah was thrown straight into the team when he first arrived and has kept out some of the more senior players like Henri Lansbury and Birkir Bjarnason.

"When Mile Jedinak returns to full fitness it will be interesting to see whether Onomah's game-time is reduced."

Has he impressed you whenever he's been on the pitch?
"He started very well and looked a class above the rest.

"For his age, he's strong and has had no problems physically dealing with the demands of the Championship. He works hard when he loses the ball, passes it well and has an eye for goal.

Last week he lost his place in the team as boss Steve Bruce switched to a 4-4-2 system and he now faces a challenge to get back in."

How have the Aston Villa fans taken to him?
"Well, it always helps when you score an early goal for your new club and he got an important one at Bristol City.

"Supporters see him as a player who will develop nicely across the season and one who can help them back into the Premier League."

Can you see there being a potential Premier League star in him?
"Yes, he has all the attributes to succeed.

"He's big and strong, gets up and down the field without any bother and looks to create at every opportunity.

"This season will help him get a run of games under his belt then he can kick on. Playing alongside better-quality players at Tottenham will also help."

At this early stage, can you see the loan move helping Onomah develop in the future?
"Yes, the games will help him. He needs a season to learn how to deal with different situations in games and at Villa the pressure is always on the team to perform.

"His body will need to adapt to the rigours of playing two games a week in mens football and when he returns to Spurs will be a better player."

came on for the final 20 minutes yesterday as a 2nd striker and predictably had a bit of a mare losing the ball a few times and a couple of attacks breaking down because of him. he's going to struggle to get back into the side now with villa winning their past couple of games and being thrown on as some auxiliary striker definitely isn't going to help him get his place back.
