Not much to report really so far. The last few minutes of the half have been slightly better, but Villa haven't played enough football. You can tell Onomah has ability every time he is on the ball, it just hasn't happened enough.

However my usual critique also applies... I wish sometimes he'd be a bit busier as it would benefit him massively to make impact on games. You can still be languid but making runs into a position to get yourself involved - Josh doesn't strike me as a 'thinker', someone who reads/anticipates the game and what might happen a phase or two ahead. I also don't think he's been very good defensively in that 45 mins in all truth, at close quarters he's scrapped for it but he's been pretty weak having to track back and again his reading of the game comes into play - when to make the burst to get back in to cover space etc.

Hopefully he is more involved in the second half.

Yeah i watched the first half hour and have to agree with you. When he is on the ball 'things' happen. He is very good.

However, this is not to slight the lad, but being the first time i have seen him for Villa, the game completely passed him by at times. I don't think he knew what he was meant to be doing in that first part of the game. He was all over the place positionally and all the good stuff that bristol city were creating were by simple balls that completely by passed villa midfield, and normally though the channels where Onomah should have been.

I'm not sure if that is down to him, or down to Bruce setting up his team , or just a lack of experience, but at times he did look completely lost. Maybe a bit of all three, because we know he can play in the middle park because he did it so well in the summer for England. Have to agree, needs to be a bit more physical and get on the ball, and work harder in defending space and marking players/tracking back.

But on the ball he is looking really sharp. Quick and decisive.

Pleased to see he got a full ninety minutes not to mention a cracking goal, I can see him beginning to find his feet there and a few months down the line he could be really purring, maybe bossing that midfield.

As much as I wanted Josh to get some game time and happy for him to get a loan, I feel that sending him to Villa is a bit of a stitch up. They seemed to start with a 3-4-2-1 with Josh in the 2, but not much football is going to be built up from the back when you have John Terry and Samba in the back 3. To add Glenn Whelan in midfield to that and playing any kind of decent football is always going to be a struggle. Might be better if they had players like Grealish and Lansbury in the team, not sure if those guys are injured/out of favour.

I'm in the 88th minute of the game now, I think it's been a very good performance by Onomah in general. His decision making and composure on the ball is what marks him out....

Onomah Interlude - 91st min (as I type this) - Onomah just played a wonderful pass inside the full back, split two players.

...What ever he does, he does well, but I get what @mpickard2087 is saying, he's so easy on the eye, you just want him doing more of it, I think/hope this will come, but in the right set up (and I think tonights was pretty good for him - I think it was a 41311 with him in the centre of the "3") and we also have to accept that quality is what matters most, not quantity, as long as he's doing enough, and tonight I think he did (third most passes on the Villa team tonight, most tackles of anyone on the pitch).

I love that he picks up the ball, moves with his head up and then plays an incisive pass whilst on the move, it's such a rare skill, most players valve is flapping too much to be composed whilst everything is whirling around them, Onomah has the game picture, even as he moves he recalibrates it.

Lets bare in mind this is only his first couple of league starts in a tough league as well, you don't start seeing the best of players (like the ones we end up trying to buy from France etc) until they've had about 40-60 games.

A couple of little footnotes, Onomah was whoscored's highest rated player on the pitch (8.29).

It was good to see Onomah giving the post match, pitch side interview, spoke confidently, good sign. Liked what Whelan said about Onomah being encouraged to play and if he makes a few mistake, so be it. Exactly how it should be.

Apparently Josh made the most tackles of anyone on the pitch yet an earlier poster said thought the game was passing him by, in the first half anyway.
I didn't see the game so I can't say judge but that does sort of fit in with my sense that he is so languid that he doesn't look busy enough when the stats say that he very much is.
No such problem with the ball though, that stands out for all to see.

He was playing further up again though wasn't he?

He needs to be playin in the deeper midfield role.

Pretty sure Grealish has a long-term injury and Onomah was bought in to compensate for his loss.

I thought Lansbury tended to be first choice (at least he was last season) but maybe Bruce sees Whelan as more first choice now.

Villa ended up playing a kind of 4141 with Onomah rcm in the 4. On the move it was more 41311 I think.

Either way, it wasn't a bad set up with Whelan doing the mopping up and Onomah playing more as an 8.

Ah that's good as fed up with him being played out of position as won't do his confidence and development any good.

Yeah they started as a 3-4-2-1, with Onomah in the 'Eriksen role', but within minutes had gone to basically a 3-5-2 with Josh dropping back onto the right of a cm3. Then after half hour of it not working they binned the back three and it was pretty much 4-1-4-1 for the rest of the game. But yes he was always in a central role, which is the main thing we want to see.

What have Villa fans had to say about his performance?

....

Absolutely quality.
He's really fantastic. I'd be shocked if under the guidance of Poch at Spurs he doesn't end up being a top player in a few years time, definitely has all the attributes.
Really think he will continue to grow as he gets more first team experience, he is the (loan) signing of the summer so far for me.
really good player, said it before he glides with the ball. Way too good for us sadly :(
As well as being pure class with the ball, his work off the ball and tackling is quality. I Really enjoy watching him play and can see him getting better.
Excellent player. Very Delph like in his movement and ability on the ball.
Best player on the park last night. Has an eye for a pass, strength, vision, dribbling, composure and a cracking shot.
He makes it look easy. I'm looking forward to seeing him grow throughout the season.
He's good.
His beard is not.
Onomah by far the best player we have and he's not even ours...

The only downside was that he was being compared to Delph! :(

Delph is a good player, like Scott Sinclair, made the complete wrong decision with his career. If he would have moved to us under the guidance of Poch i think he would be a very valuable squad player.

Have high hopes for Josh, i don't know if he misses that killer instinct or self belief, but he has all the tools to really take the game to the other team and i hope on this loan at Villa he starts to find this self belief.

Sadly I don't think he posts any more, but I remember @Kendall having an absolute crush-boner for Fabian Delph, back in the day.
