Sounds like bruce's thought process is something like "big, strong lad who can kick a ball - i'll chuck him up top". He's evidently a CM and has always played his best football there. I don't understand how randoms on a football forum can see this but managers at fairly big clubs can't? Even poch has played him out of position continuously. I don't think his workrate is that bad when he plays at CM either. He tends to track back hard and make good challenges when he plays there so i don't think that is the issue. It's almost like they don't trust a talented youngster to play at CM but are happy enough for him to be average in another position? Fucking weird management.

I think Villa is a pretty decent loan for him. It's a huge club, they're expected to win most games and there's quite the pressure there. I know their fotball is pretty dire, but I'd say it's a good place for Onomah to work on his weaknesses.

It may be a very simplistic view, but if he's to genuinely have a future with us, he should be able to deliver consistently at that level and prove himself to be trustworthy in terms of getting the basics right. After we moved away from the Bentaleb/Mason axis, the deeper CM roles are reserved for responsible players. Poch would probably sooner play Glenn Whelan than Xhaka in those roles.

i think we should remember that at onomah's age, danny rose had three failed championship loans on his c.v and harry kane couldn't displace david nugent at leicester so it doesn't necessarily mean anything if this one goes the same way for josh.

i don't really think @LexingtonSpurs point about him needing to adapt or be resigned to playing in the lower leagues is fair either, even at youth level onomah hasn't ever been effective in forward positions so i don't know why managers think that's suddenly going to change in the seniors. some players are versatile and are good in many positions whilst others are great in one but crap in others, the latter applies to josh but it doesn't make him any less of an asset to a team that uses him correctly. if he gets a run playing as a proper cm and flunks it then i will begin to concede that he won't have a future here(though he would still be young enough to persist with for a while) but whilst he's playing in all manner of unsuitable positions then i still maintain there's a quality player in there who just isn't being used to his strengths.

Question - why is it that Poch and Bruce do not see Onomah as a CM? There has to be something they see - imo - that keeps them pushing Josh into a more advanced role.

I am not yet ready to concede that SC posters know more about football than Poch and Bruce - combined. Convince me you know better!

I've said a few times that I'm pretty sure it's just a development thing.

Burnley midfielder Jack Cork has told Sky Sports that he feels Aston Villa loanee Joshua Onomah made a smart decision in choosing to leave Spurs on loan this season.

"I watched the first half of the Villa game (against Preston) the other night and I saw Onomah," said Cork. "I didn't know much about him before but I saw himself put himself about, get physical and I think that's all you need. To put yourself out there, to be in a competitive environment where people depend on you to get results."

"I was really impressed with him. He could probably have sat at Tottenham playing a couple of times, but you need games coming from that sort of environment," he added.

they lost at home 2-1 to SW yesterday, Onomah missed (through injury i think) so i wonder who they'll be using as their scapegoat this time.

played well today apparently -

Spurs really do have a player in Onomah
@Dr_TonyXia Hi Tone, Can we please buy Onomah after his loan deal ends, many thanks, Villa Fans
Outplayed 2nd half. Onomah and Davis exceptional
This has been the best I've seen villa under Bruce, should really be 6-1 up Davis onomah adomah have been outstanding
Onomah baller
The link play between Davis and Onomah is unreal
Cracking atmosphere and good game here now. Villa look exciting to watch (!), especially Davis and Onomah.
The build up play to that penalty came with some fantastic work from Onomah, what a talent.
Onomah is quality!
Just before that, Josh Onomah rattled the bar for Villa. Like him the more I see him. Improving all the time under Bruce. Another top Tottenham prospect
I agree Davis and Onomah were great. Onomah really made the play work through the middle and going forward. A pleasure to watch him today

And then when he has an off day they'll hate him.

Yep, it's common amongst fans of all clubs though. He's young and that should always go in his favour IMO - a seasoned pro making mistakes is much more worthy of a fan's castigation than a young player learning his trade.

Will be interesting to see if Poch becomes more flexible with his loan policies if this (and CCV at Sheffield United) loan is viewed as a success. I think he tries to keep them here to ensure they are adapting to the philosophy and tempo of the first team but there comes a point where they need games. Perhaps Kyle Walker-Peters falls into that category now, given his assured (but very limited) showings for us this season.
