With Onomah's international pedigree, if he doesn' get a decent chance with the 1st team. The club's reputation for youth progression will suffer massively and have longer consequences. Particularly, as Solanke, Kenny, Calvert-Lewin and Cook are all involved this season in the EPL. So I fully expect him to get his chance next season even if we sign another CM

Poch isn't as great as he thinks he is at bringing through youngsters unfortunately. I'll only change that opinion once I see the likes of Onomah, KWP, Edwards and TOB given first team exposure.

The list of players apparently unhappy with opportunities seems to be growing and it can't all be down to their attitudes. There's one common denominator in all this.

The stronger the squad is, the harder it is to bring players through - that’s always going to be he case. We have internationals in every position, sometimes two per position. It’s not easy to find the space to blood more players, while also ensuring the experienced squad players stay sharp.

I think Poch wants the players 100% ready or he won’t play them. If that’s the case then I don’t agree with him because he can’t except a 18 year old to be fully ready and not make mistakes. The Apoel game for example, he should’ve had the academy players that he sees in the long term on the squad. Unfortunately I don’t think Luke Amos will make it here so someone younger that he sees can make it in the long term should be in the squad

Not just a Spurs thing but premier league in general, I think they should add an 8th sub that has to be an u20 homegrown player.

This will give another chance to allow youth players to be involved in match day squads but also it might even give them minutes in certain games as a manager might think rather than give the same old meh players sub appearances i'll see what this youth player can do in latter stages of a game.

True but don’t you think that Poch maybe sometimes give the wrong academy player the chance, that the player probably won’t be here in the long term (thinking of Georgiou and Amos)

I agree with Poch. Onomah is in no way ready to play in a deeper midfield role in the prem. he just doesn’t have the tactical discipline or tackling/pressing desire to be trusted yet. Not saying he won’t develop these traits but i’ve seen enough of him to understand why Poch hasn’t played him in midfield yet.

It would be a start, but a small one and I'd like to see more than that. They actually used that argument when they went from five to seven subs, it would allow more youngsters on to the bench, and all that has happened is bigger squads and even less English/young players getting minutes.

They are his weaknesses and off the ball his game requires work, that shouldn't be argued, what puzzles me though is that he has been given zero minutes in central midfield at all. Surely part of development is learning on the job? - and that is in the thick of it and not shunted out to the wings. It is a bit disappointing to have never seen him for instance alongside Wanyama or Dier as the main holding player to help him out, lessen the pressure, and actually seen how he goes. Poch has also put out some fairly bold midfields this season where discipline and positional sense hasn't been high on the agenda, so that adds to the puzzle as to why Onomah hasn't got any minutes at all in his natural role.

Maybe he just doesn't rate him all that highly, who knows.

Scott Parker warned of signing average players
who block the development of our own or youngsters.
Sissoko comes into that bracket
and N'koudou and probably some others.
KWP showed himself ready some months ago
but we sign Aurier and persist with very average second choice full backs.
With Toby out for a long period Foyth who is clearly talented has had very few minutes.
Love Poch. but he is sailing under false colours.

Agree.

Josh just seems to be lazy off the ball. It may be a tactical issue in that he does not know where to go but it makes him appear that he can't be bothered to get into position. Doesn't matter how strong he is on the ball if he is not in position to get it in the first place. I think this is why Poch does not trust him at CM.

Trippier is clearly not average. He's a better player than Walker-Peters is at the moment, he is playing for a reason.

Trippier was so good last season but as soon as he hits a rough bit of form people just want him thrown out and replaced with a youth player? I don't understand it

I want more game time for KWP and Foyth
and some other youth players where appropriate.
Slowly, like Harry Winks.
Trippier and Davies are both decent but limited players.
Aurier is a firestorm that might just blow himself out
long before he becomes a legend.

I think we can all accept this, but there have been so many games in Poch's 3 1/2 years where Poch has had the opportunity to better integrate the very best of our academy players. The domestic cups, the Europa games he clearly had no interest in, the domestic cups he clearly had very little interest in. And many, many league games where we have been home and hosed with 20-30 minutes.

I think Poch wants the players 100% ready or he won’t play them. If that’s the case then I don’t agree with him because he can’t except a 18 year old to be fully ready and not make mistakes. I agree, especially frustrating when you know that many of the first team players are a long way from 100% in all aspects of their make up.

I love the way players get all the blame, but the coach who's job it is to teach, instil and enhance these qualities gets away Scott free. He's played Winks, Alli and Eriksen there and they are all varying degrees in flawed defensively and without the ball.

Nobody would suggest that Onomah be put out there and expected to hold our midfield together in PL games. But Anyone who's watched Onomah over the last few years, or even in the recent WC knows that he's capable of demonstrating those qualities you say he lacks, but he's a kid, they need to be developed, he's not going to develop them playing out on the wings.

How about if Poch had played Onomah in midfield in games that he clearly didn't care much about, the Europa, domestic cups, 20-30 minutes games when we are 3 or 4 nil up, and especially in pre season friendlies. But with players like Wanyama, Dier or Dembele with him. It was almost like out of stubbornness he was refusing to play him there, playing him is a winger, knowing he isn't going to show anything like his best qualities.

Worked for Winks

What's worked for Winks most is Dembele and Wanyama getting injured or knackered and Dier having the alacrity of tortoise on charlie. Even then he couldn't get a game for 4 moths in the middle of last season and is still not playing all the games he could be.

They are his weaknesses and off the ball his game requires work, that shouldn't be argued, what puzzles me though is that he has been given zero minutes in central midfield at all. Nothing stops them doing it now. This season Poch usually brings on Sissoko or Dembele depending which of them is on the bench as our last sub. He could mix it up when we're winning because what are they going to do in 10-15 minutes when the game is dead. That time can be used for a kid who has something to give while the rest are just coasting to the final whistle.

With Toby out, Dier starts at the back. If we're 2-0 up instead of making a like-for-like sub in midfield, why not bring Foyth on instead, push Dier into midfield and Foyth can get some needed minutes which as a center back he needs.
