Had 3 CBs though, he looks abysmal in a back 4, imo.

So did Rose, and he's a 50m FB who's off to Man U apparently.

I think the way we played, with a back four, high line, and a front four pushed up and not pressing properly against possibly the best team in Europe right now, would have made any RB look pretty ragged.

Trippier hasn't looked defensively terrible in any normal game this year, has had some great games like Liverpool and Real and continues to out produce Walker massively offensively, despite Walker playing for a side tearing everyone apart like nothing we've ever seen before in this league:

I know Walker is overall a better defensive package, but it's not the quantum gap people keep trying to suggest, it's pretty marginal, Walker used to get himself skanked too, because for all his pace, he wasn't the brightest, and sometimes he just also got plain done, like he did tonight by Grey - hardly Sane - for pace. And Walker also got himself caught out of position, up the pitch, like he did against West Ham, backend last season, in a game that cost us dear.

With Toby and Sanchez in the back 3, and Wanyama in DM, Tripps at RWB has a lot more freedom.

But when none of those 3 are out there, and it's a back 4, Tripps has a lot more defending to do.

Walker is much better than Tripp, I need to let it go but I'm still annoyed we sold him to city. Yesterday was not even a pen, Trippier wouldn't have even had the pace to get back cos Gray was flying. There was also a few occasions where Walker used his pace to make some very good blocks and challenges on him. I wouldn't be surprised though if Tripp ended up with better stats going forward than Walker this season, I noticed that he doesn't go forward as much for them, he doesn't need to with all their firepower and precision in the final 3rd.

As above have mentioned, in a back 3, with a holding midfielder (or even Sissoko) he's got much more license to get forward and whip crosses into the box which is his major strength.

Defensively he is capable but lacks that pace that kills him on occasion. Very much like Davies. That's why an in form Rose/Aurier are by a distance our strongest option.

That said, considering Rose is off to United, he needs to sort his shit out because he looked like a £5m left back on Saturday

He's more withdraw now at Citeh; think that is what Pep want him to play, not sure if he likes that TBH. But I guess he wouldnt lose too much sleep anyways; everyone is clamouring over how good he is as a defender now. Less job, more money, perfect for him.

Fact is, their backline are so well protected by what's going on in front of them. Walker, Mangala, Otamendi and Delph hardly looked impregnable on paper, but when we played them we couldn't cause them any problems.

Erm... Tripps got absolutely destroyed against Burnley at Wembley too. I believe one of the ITKs said most teams specifically target him as our weak link.

See, this is the type of hyperbole I’m talking about. He didn’t get destroyed at all, one through ball got played between him and TA, there was fuck all he could do about it, it was just a great pass by Brady (or it might have even been a fluke that was meant for the other player).

And as I showed above, that ITK is not going to plan is it? Aurier’s looked a shitload more vulnerable.

So anyone that's not our title rivals (on paper, before our average PL season began).

If we're talking about on paper then Man City aren't our rivals. They spent more on full backs last summer than we've spent on our entire squad. With the money they've spent they should be miles in front of us and they are.

As for Trippier, he's a good player with a great delivery, but limited pace. If we'd had a fully fit squad we'd have played a different formation and he wouldn't have been so exposed.

.................and if Walker was in our team v City, Sane would have torn him to pieces as well.

EDIT; Seems I'm wrong on this and that Walker, left alone in acres of space v Sane like Trippier was, would have bottled him up. Must have changed a lot from the Kyle Walker I knew who was usually all over the place in a back 4.

He got absolutely embarrased by Burnley and by Chelsea. Then against City, he did not even look someone who had any business playing football.

At tleast Walker probably would have stayed in his position. Trippier couldnt even do that against City. He looked like had no clue where his position was, ffs. Worst game I’ve ever seen him play. And I know he is better than that. I dont blame him as he shouldnt have been playing that game, let alone 90 fucking minutes. I blame Poch.

Yeah, right, he was famous for doing that. The loss of Sanchez was vital because I'm sure we'd have gone with a back 3 if possible. Aurier, IMO, wouldn't have lasted 90mins without a red card v Sane on that form. What was wrong (again IMO) was that Lamela or Sissoko (preferably both) would have tracked back much better and helped Trippier out. I said exactly this in the 'team v Man City' thread before the teams were announced and highlighted Sane as a big problem for us. Trippier was hung out to dry but it's all water under the bridge now.

Walker shits all over Tripps regardless of the opposition or what some stats might try to suggest.

indeed, it's depressing still seeing this argued.

we've been left with an average RB who has a good cross on him, nothing more. were as walker is one of the top RBs in Europe.
hoping and expecting a lot more from Serge next year though
