My pick for surprise player of this season. I've written about how much I rate Amos and I'm really glad that he's getting a chance to show everyone how good he can be. He's not the flashiest of CM's but his versatility, work rate and very solid technical skills will appeal to Poch and his staff. What we have in Amos is a CM who will give his all in training session and every game. If Poch sees fit to start him at Newcastle, I have no doubt Luke will repay that faith with a tireless performance.

2 footed as well which is always a bonus.

Unlike Skipp who only uses his left to stand up with atm by the looks of the highlights

Other than the above vid, I've never seen the boy play. Could anyone please help me with more of an idea of what sort of midfielder he is?

I've been impressed with him pre-season games has got more confident on the ball each game.. at 21 needs to be playing week in week out I think if we could get him sent on loan to Leeds to work with Bielsa for a season it would bring him on no end

Very versatile CM. When deployed as a DM, he'll recycle possession, keep things tidy and break up play. Partnered with a more defensive minded CM, he can make forward runs and even score goals like this

He is definitely not as highly rated as Skipp, Onomah, Winks etc but I believe we can rely on him in cup games and the league.

Given the injuries to Wanyama and Winks, Dier's late return, his excellent form in pre-season, and Pochettino's comments, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him start at the base of midfield against Newcastle in the first game.

If Sissoko is still injured by then as well, I would suggest there's a reasonable chance we could see a midfield 3 of:
Skipp/Amos
Amos/Skipp - Eriksen

I’d be very surprised if Amos and Eriksen weren’t two of the midfield 3 actually. If Sissoko is back, he’ll be the third, but very much expect Amos at the base of midfield against Newcastle. Hope so anyway; he’s earned the chance.

Tottenham are set for talks with Luke Amos over a new contract, Sky Sports News understands.

The youngster impressed on the club's pre-season tour of the USA, starting all three games against Barcelona, Roma and Milan

Initial discussions are understood to have been pencilled in for when the central midfielder and the squad return to England.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino also admitted Amos has the chance to start the first game of the season against Newcastle, with ongoing injuries to midfielders Victor Wanyama and Moussa Sissoko, and Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier yet to return to training following the World Cup.

The 21-year-old said he hopes to emulate the success of Chelsea's N'Golo Kante.

"I like to watch a lot of midfielders," Amos said. "As a child, I liked Xavi and [Andres] Iniesta, but now when I see how amazing Kante's been, I love to watch Kante and see all the plaudits he's getting.

"In the past, players [like him] didn't get that, so to see all the praise he's getting is really good. I love his all-round game - his energy, running, tackling, passing. He's taken the defensive midfield or box-to-box midfield role to a new level with his energy. If I can be anything like that, then I'll be a good player.

"I'm more a box-to-box, defensive-minded. I'm not a No.10. I'm not a tricky winger. I focus on running, passing, getting on the ball, making things happen, stopping things. They're things Kante does as well."

Amos - a product of the Spurs academy - signed a new deal until 2019 earlier this year before joining Stevenage on loan.

Tottenham have been searching for a long-term replacement for Dembele, whose contract runs out next summer, and will listen to offers for him before the transfer deadline on August 9 along with Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose.

If he has the confidence in himself then he should play. We have already heard Poch saying he's old enough, and we know Poch will have no problem throwing him in there.

Nothing against him but I don’t think he’s good enough to be a first team player. Maybe play some first rounds cup games but that’s about it imo. The best thing for him would be to go out on loan in the championship
We desperately need a good CM

I think Skipp is the more talented of the two and i'd prefer him in all honesty but Amos has been very refreshing this pre-season. He totally deserves a shot in the first game I think. I don't think he would let anybody down. Can't be that much worse than Dier anyway.

With these kids in midfield we've played some really good stuff on this tour as well, first half against Barca aside.

I'd much rather we hung on to Amos until we've sealed a deal for a midfield player. We may well need to rely on him if we sign nobody.

But what would happened to him after the first game when out first team players come back? He would barely get any game time so the best thing for him would be a loan move to a decent championship side imo

I'm fine with Amos and/or Skipp as an extra option (to take some load off the first timers) IF we get additional top quality cm.

Or he could hold his own and turn out to be a solid CM for us and get better as a result of the confidence placed in him by Poch and the team. I for one want as many youth players that are competent and can help the 1st team to breakthrough into the squad but it sounds as if you only want specific youth players to play for us. We all have our favorites but at least give the kids a chance to see if they can make it with us.

It’s not that I’m not willing to give him a chance but what would be best for him at his age, to play 1 league game and that’s it and a couple of cup games or a full season in the championship with a decent team?

Is there any particular reason why you're assuming that he'll only play one PL game? Did I miss something about Poch saying that Amos can only play 1 game a season? I'm seriously confused.

Good for him.

Hopefully this stinker of a window works in our favour again like it did when Poch was forced to play dier as a mid and he was outstanding that year
