I suppose my point is that we often seem to preserve our transfer funds in the vague/vain hope that we might possibly land a deJong type of signing and in the meantime comparable clubs to us nip in and sign players like Barella. I don't think we'll get within sniffing distance of deJong, Rabiot, N'Dombele etc so we shouldn't waste our time on these pipe dreams.
100% agree.

I find it really frustrating when we try to compete for signings like deJong and repeatedly get brushed off. Paredes would be a nice signing but when did we ever sign anyone Chelsea were interested in? I'd sooner have a slightly clearer run at Barella if that's remotely feasible and as for his size, it hasn't hindered Modric. I also think Skipp will turn out well at DM and we need a player just like Barella who takes on the opposition in midfield and creates space for others. Doubt very much we're even looking at him though but he'd be a quality replacement for Dembele.

Didn't they want Llorente?

If Chelsea sign Paredes for under £40mill, it’ll blow my mind. There are so many players out there that could come in to our team and improve us, especially now with Dembele going and the current injuries, and Paredes is one of them. I would have gone for him in the summer, what I don’t get is that he’s very similar to Jorginho. This is all a bit mad and nonsensical now.

The fact that he's similar to Jorginho is exactly why Sarri wants him. They don't really have another player in the squad who plays as a regista, and Sarri has been calling out for an alternative in the press.

It makes sense as he is replacing rat boy in the squad

Exactly this. Barbarella would be fine. We aren't getting De Jong.

So , another reason we need to shift him on is for space in the squad (non-HG) so we can get a striker?

Will be sad to see moose go, good luck you were a joy to watch. The way he glided past opponents on his day was breathtaking, whatever we get in a transfer fee for him won't come close to replacing him. But I suppose it's better than nothing we are due in the summer

Perhaps we will get a player that can do things he wasn’t very good at like scoring goals or making incisive passes ?

Fair play to him ... always been a good servant to the club and seems to be an intelligent person. Wish him all the best - we will miss him that's for sure

It's one of those things I didn't realise until I started going to games, but the fans absolutely adored Dembele. He seemed to create a special atmosphere of his own; he really was a massive fan favourite.

One of my strongest memories of him was against Everton at home last year. Rooney was trying to tackle him, but Dembele was in beast mode and just held him off like he was a boy. Rooney got so helpless he just scythed him down and got a yellow. That cheer was louder than any of the goals!
