Whoa slow it down. A brief appearance is nothing to go on yet. There is nothing wrong with splashing out on quality players like Paulinho AND developing youngsters at the same time.

Spending £17 mill on quality is all well and good but we spent £17 mill on Paulinho. That's criminal.

No. Spending £20m on Stewart Downing was criminal. Spending £17m on a first choice Brazilian CM who'd just been voted third best player in the confeds was seen as quite a coup at the time, and will do again in the future.

All that's irrelevant. He's done nothing to justify his price tag, he's done nothing to warrant a starting place. He just looks average. Typical AVB signing really - big lad, puts himself about, doesn't do much else.

It's extremely relevant. I've watched him playing for Brazil and he looks a much much better player, because they play a high tempo quick passing game, pretty much the opposite of how we played this season under AVB. He's been here 4 months in a struggling side, how about we give him a year to adapt and prove himself before writing him off?

quotes from Tim via the Guardian

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/dec/22/southampton-tottenham-premier-league-match-report

Mousa Dembélé, had limped away with an ankle complaint, the visitors flung on the captain of their under-21 team, Nabil Bentaleb, to fill the void. The interim manager has overseen the France junior's development in his role as technical coordinator, just as he did Adebayor when he was cast from the senior set-up by Villas-Boas this season, and the board will have been encouraged to witness a young player progressing from academy to first team.

There was a logic to the 19-year-old's involvement. "I don't know Capoue much – I've only had three days' training, so I don't know a lot of these new players – but, at the moment, I know I can trust that kid," said Sherwood. "It's about the heat of the battle and knowing who you can trust, and the kid's ready to play. He trains like every day is the last day in the world, listens and has a fantastic attitude." He was tidy and impressive, his debut a minor sideshow in the context of this team reviving their league form, but subtle, sensible tweaks like that could yet see Sherwood's short-term appointment extended at least until the summer.

Doesnt know Capoue much...gotta laugh at that

He trains like every day is the last day in the world

Love that about him, wish all our players had the same attitude.
Go onto the pitch and play every game as though it was their last.
Not sure if he is that deep but I hope Adebayor realises this after the death of his brother and goes on to leave all the old crap behind and just gives football his all for the rest of his career.

Why's it 'extremely relevant'? Playing for Brazil is very different to playing for Tottenham.

Certainly I'll give him time but better players have failed here. He's shown nothing to justify his high prce tag, nothing to justify he should be first choice. Just seems a player we didn't need.

Judging by his Brazil games he's far more suited to a quick tempo passing game than the slow meandering football we were playing under AVB. Now that the shackles seem to have been removed, he may well excel. We won't know until he's played a few games under Sherwood or whoever comes in.

High tempo game isn't going to make him actually have a shot on target or stop taking wild shots from outside the box. He's just not very good.

We'll see.

If we're going to play a deep line and two strikers, the midfield becomes a lot more sparse, and midfielders need to cover a lot more ground. "box to box" anybody? That is supposedly the type of player that Paulinho is.

Risky sub, at the time I think most of us would have been like 'why not Holtby or Capoue!?' but he came on and slotted right in. He has a bit of fight about him, composed and smart on the ball.

Not sure which goal this is from, but..

One of the other youth team players tweeted this picture to him last night.

It's amazing how people can say this about a Brazilian starter who was vital for there confed. win. Most players from Brasil take a long time to adapt to the EPL like Sandro for example. But no people are happy to right off a player who hasn't even been that bad for tottenham as soon as they can.

It just shows a complete lack of understanding. This isn't fifa, players don't just work as soon as you put them in your team. Things take time.

I hope Paulie comes around, but for now his wanks in front of goal severely limit his value. His midfield ability is nothing more than any other player who can slot in centrally, so he's going to have to start finishing those if he wants to hold a starting spot in a two-man central midfield.

This is the main tangible benefit of having Sherwood in charge.

He knows the youth players well and knows if they are capable of stepping up.

Andre was terrible at using them, even worse than Redknapp and since it's such a strong part of our club strategy, it makes sense to give game time to youngsters with serious promise.

Saying that I would be astounded if any fan would like to admit that they thought it was a good idea bringing Bentaleb on today, in this match, in that situation with no defensive midfielder on the pitch! Credit Sherwood for bravery/chutzpah, it was OK in the end.

Love a bit of chutzpah when its used in the right manner ;)

All of this Paulinho hate is so strange. You have a kid come and do well for 40 minutes, and he was very good, and all of sudden he is the answer to all of our midfield woes. Yet Paulinho is rubbish? This is a guy that is a solid nailed on starter for brazil, a guy that has won more in the last 3 years than we have in a generation, who stood with iniesta and neymar as players of the tournament in the summer.
He is in a new league and playing in a team that is struggling yet he is cut no slack. He is probably exhausted after having very little rest for over a year.

I love spurs fans sometimes.

Frikin thank you. The guy didnt have a summer break and no one had been shining in Andre's team.

Paulinho is a class player who needs to be given a bit of a break by people.

hahaha EXACTLY.

People are so quick to forget and so quick to Judge. Sandro took a good half a season to bed in as did a host of our players.

Perhaps, just perhaps people need to stop slating our players when they havent lived up to the expectations we place on them and understand that there may be other factors involved other than 'x is shit'

The lack of patience some fans have is amazing to me and they have been sucked 100% into sky sports version of football. Football teams arent built in a day and sometimes a footballer needs the right team playing the right tactics around them to flourish.

Paulinho has been one of the successes of the players we bought in the summer. His form dropped off as the whole team started to fall apart...there has been a lot more going on at WHL than I think we will ever know. Plus AVB continued to play him in every single game not resting him even after long international jaunts
