Mental fragility was his problem I think.

He's fine playing in a diddy league, or in and for Brazil where he's comfortable, but he had more than one go at Europe and ultimately failed. Definitely is a player under the right circumstances but speed and physicality of our league eventually mentally beat him, allied with a volatile persiod in terms of managers

I will always remember the tackle he pulled out of against Newcastle which lead to a goal and also that shot against Burnley. I can't think of anything he excelled at and he was pretty poor to be honest.

And that wall with Adebayor...

Paulinho was a quality signing. Sadly he came into a team and despite early good performances, as the whole team flagged, his motivation clearly did too. The manager that signed him left, the other Brasilian players he bonded with (Gomes and Sandro) left/were sidelined.

And he looked fed up.

I don't think he was suited to the Premier League's style of football. In the same way Juan Sebastian Veron, a player of incredible quality failed to make his mark here, Paulinho just "couldn't do it" with us.

He either needed more time and coaching to adapt but I think he gave up long before he was sold.

Still remember the way Shearer was banging on about how we'd found a real gem in the first few games after we'd signed him.

Glad he's making a decent career after us.

Yes he may not have done as well as expected for this free but even considering the free there have been far worse players at Spurs...

Tottenham (Paulinho)

By Tom Hayward (@tomfoins87)

In terms of outlay and return, Paulinho rises to the top of Tottenham’s very deep pool of expensive non-talent over the years. The £18m Brazilian started reasonably well, scoring a last-minute backheel winner against Cardiff, but very quickly his ‘new Lampard’ tag became laughable.

The overriding memory of Paulinho is his unforgettable ‘shot’ against Burnley in 2015, which caused scenes of sheer disbelief in the away end. In another game against Norwich, he trapped a pass so poorly that it bounced up and hit him in the face.

Some limited players at least put in the effort, but even that was beyond him; managers gave unsubtle nods towards him crying off injured before European games.

Thinking about Paulinho makes me physically angry, and I’m glad he’s in China where I no longer have to look at him.

Has anybody else seen his hat-trick against Uruguay last night? A stunner from distance, a poke from a rebound and a chest-in (!) from a cross.

Knew he was quality.... :cautious:

Neymar's goal in that is ridiculous.

Our worst midfielder of the past decade - but only because I'm waiting until the end his first season to see if he improves before giving that title to Sissoko. Couldn't pass, couldn't tackle, couldn't beat a man, no real engine, missed a lot of chances even if he did get into good positions. Most of the time the guy looked like he thought he was playing barefoot on Copacabana beach.

If his name had been Paul Inhowe, a 25 year old English midfielder that we signed from Sunderland for £17m who put in the exact same performances, he'd have been held up as the poster boy for why English players are over rated and over priced.

No, he would not! Nobody will ever take that magnificent title away from Andy Carroll. £35m back when that was still an outrageous sum of money. What a marvelous buy that was from the scousers:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

He's in great form; 2 one-touch assists in Brazil's 3-0 win over Paraguay today.

To be fair, in his first few games for us I thought he looked quality. A very positionally aware footballer. Lost confidence very quickly and then never adapted. He's not a bad player.
