His kicking and distribution is hypnotising. It gained him an honourable mention in "The Nowhere Men" by Michael Calvin.

This is when he was at Gillingham U21s

Those are definitely playing for Southampton u21s, not Gillingham.

Great video though. Honestly didn't realise he was so good at playing the ball out. Makes a lot of sense that we like him quite so much - seems the prototype of the modern keeper.

Might be a mix of Gillingham and Southampton tbf, but there are some young clips of him thrown in.

It's just a bit annoying that we finally get a lad who can distribute, then we start fannying around with this "playing from the back" pep crap we can't actually do

I have no issues with him being our number 2. Although I really don't know why we retained Vorm for another season. Only thing that I worry about with Gazz is his handling ability. I feel he doesn't hold on to shots firmly enough.at this point I agree that he should be starting until Lloris is back. Unless he has a awful game.

He could improve on his handling at crosses also..he looks a little vulnerable there.

He's been solid enough in most of his work which for a backup goalkeeper is all you can really ask for, and he is possibly even the best keeper at the club technique wise with the ball at his feet, but I think he's had quite a bit of luck in his outings thus far as well. In his game last season his first act was to get stranded in no mans land, and he really should have conceded a goal and/or a penalty and red card. Then last night if not for an offside call (however correct it was) everyone seems to be ignoring that he badly flapped at an aerial ball and it ended up in the net. Those two incidents go differently and he gets completely written off by the majority of the fanbase.

you really need to go back and have a proper look mate, because he punched it clear of the area in which it then returned and he was impeded so could get near the header that went in

He gets bumped very slightly. The main problem is he gets stuck under the ball within a crowd of players. I think he got away with it, personally.

He got MOTM in the Guardian lol. Do these ars journos really think we are that stupid or do they just stick a blindfold on and stick a pin in it

I suggest going out in a field with a few friends, chuck a ball in the air and try jumping even with a slight bump. he can't afford to be over the top because keepers aren't immune to conceding pens.

I agree with his cock up v Palace, but even with that he was still MotM. the thing with keepers it's a bit like a striker, if they don't play regular it can cause rustiness. I really wish the combination was till going because too many players now days don't get the chance of any competitive action. with Vorm I just don't think he has the youth anymore, yes training is tougher but no way is it match play experience

With how wet it was in the last game, I think handling was always going to be an issue.

He did the job that was needed on a shit night with little game time before so can't complain too much, he isn't to the same standard as Lloris so will always have areas to improve.

Really rate him on what I've seen.

Anyone know why he had such a bad rep when we signed him? What have been his shortcomings at previous clubs?

Not entirely convinced at the moment but it can't be easy coming into this team at the moment
Prefer him to Vorm though.
Could develop into a very good goalie

Wasn't convinced by him before these 2 matches but he's proving me wrong, hope he keeps it up.

I will say this, my faith in Hugo when facing a penalty is tested to the limit but this guy seems comfortable with them.
