I think historically no, we haven't paid 'the going rate' for our players, and that makes it remarkable that we've gotten to where we are right now.

But the new stadium and the greatly enhanced revenue streams it will attract, means we have to move on from our previous business model, and I hope and pray Daniel Levy understands this because the alternative is that our best players are all going to be seen as legitimate targets for the financially doped clubs like City and Chelsea. Having announced a world record post tax profit of £113 million, I don't think the club has too many excuses not to 're-evaluate' it's wage structure.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens, but I think as a club, we'll have to review all our fiscal practices, with the wage policy being the main issue. With the new stadium, it's a whole new ball game as our American friends like to say.

.

I understand your point - Levy will handle it...i don't think we need to have any concerns when it comes to money. If the players aren't happy with what's being offered they won't sign the contract, simple.

It's not about us chucking money at him, it's about someone else chucking a lot of money at Levy for him and what he wants to do in his career.

He seems tremendously happy here, but we all should know football better than that by now.

Son signed a new deal last summer for five years, off the back of an equally (if not better) season. No need to chuck money at him for a good while yet.

True, but we all know what contracts are worth. If someone comes along and offers to multiply his current salary by 3 or even 4 times, what's he (and just as importantly, his agent) going to do? We can't live in the past. This is our chance to stick two fingers up at the entire football community and all those pundits who believe we are 'punching above our weight' by not paying our players the so-called 'going rate'.

Of course all this discussion is predicated on the assumption that we are underpaying him, which I just find unlikely given that as the most high profile footballer from Asia, he will have had a strong negotiating standpoint last summer off the back of a very good season.

Son's most recent contract renewal apparently put him on £140k p/w. That's pretty elite money - the same site has Sterling and Firmino on £180k p/w each so Son may wish to angle for a bit more, but no-one's going to be offering to double his wages.

Actually, if that's accurate, he's not on a bad deal, and more than I expected, although if it's true, it might behove us to increase his wages to £200,000 in the light of the factors I've already mentioned previously. He is like gold dust to us and his incredible efforts should be suitably rewarded as a way of saying a massive 'Thank you', in my opinion.

I have to say however, that you tend to hear these players are on all sorts of different wages depending on what you're reading. Some papers reckon Eriksen is only on £75,000 per week (...only!) and others say he's on £120,000 per week, so I think the cautionary trick here is not to believe everything you read, necessarily.

I suspect £120k p/w for Eriksen is the contract that's on offer as he hasn't signed a new deal during the time that we've started paying multiple players £100k+ p/w.

I would imagine his sponsorships through Asian companies primarily is absolutely fucking massive and will only grow with his rising profile...that should supplement his income nicely.

I dont think it'll ever be down to money with him, maybe ambition. I'd fear he might have some desire to play for a big Spanish or Italian club during his career should the opportunity arise.

How much longer do we have the AIA sponsor around? can only imagine having Son & Kane in the team raises our profile significantly in Asia. Coupled with our on field profile it must stand us in good stead to negotiate a better deal or a large sleeve sponsor etc.

Having Son I'm sure leads to increased shirt sales which whilst going to Nike also raises our brand profile.

I don’t disagree with that, but with a finite pot of money and several key players entering the final couple of years (or in some cases, year) of their deals, Son could wait one more season.

Yep, would be interesting to see how a season of being in new stadium with increased capacity, NFL and other events affect our income.

Then maybe we’ll be able to offer slightly better contracts then we can now?

We offered him a new contract as a commitment to him before he secured the win with Korea to stop his Army conscription, I'm sure that meant a lot to him and is why I have faith he won't leave at the first opportunity, I think he loves it here.

I’m actually not sure whether we should be too worried about this with Son. Unlike South Americans or Europeans, for Asian players growing up the dream is to play in the Premier League. The Clasico giants may not hold quite the same appeal as they do to the likes of Ronaldo, Suarez and Coutinho.

Lol. Barcelona have already had 2 young players from Korea come through their academy and as far as I know they can still exercise a buyback clause for Lee Seung-woo from Verona.

If Barca came calling, you honestly think his head wouldn't be turned? He might even fancy returning to Germany at Bayern etc. I think you're being optimistic to the point of delusion regarding Sonny.
