I have to admit I was not his greatest fan at first. He looked a bit of a lightweight to me, who went missing in big games, but he has really stepped up at an impressive rate over the last year.
He signed a new deal last summer I believe but must be worth a fortune in marketing in Asia. You cannot move at Wembley these days - its becoming like mini Korea and we will soon have to include Kimchi in matchday catering!.
Hope he gets that big contract as he certainly deserves it!.
Rumours are we are looking to give him another contract already.

Don’t see the point in the new contract? Already signed up until 2023?

Because that's how the club is run; if a player improves and consistently performs well, they will be rewarded with a better contract.
It's a great incentive.
And, taking Eriksen & Toby as examples, extending contracts of our top talent is never a bad thing, regardless of expiry date.

reasons why we don't buy a ton of players, we don't need to. Poch just improves what he has. I think that's called coaching.

Agree. It is interesting to see where we go from here.

Very few foresaw Sissoko’s emergence coming.

We are currently writing up wish lists of new midfielders, full backs etc.

But I do wonder if Poch has seen where the players we already have can be improved and move up a level.

On the other hand can Poch be ruthless enough to move a player on?

I would ask Adebayor, Lennon, Capoue, Kaboul, Pritchard, Janssen, Nkoudou...
But they were players he thought who had the wrong character.

He seems happy with the character of the current squad. Now he has the choice of helping them develop or making the choice o getting rid of players with great attitudes but not the right ability for where we are now.

I mean, he sold Ryan Mason and he bleeds Spurs and had the perfect attitude. Don't think Soldado ever had character issues either, or Chadli or Wimmer that I can recall.

Maybe but I believe that was part of his moulding the squad period. Mason, Soldado,Chadli and Wimmer were all squad players so easily moved on.

The players I am discussing are first team players. I am interested to see if Poch tries to upgrade on the likes of Dier. He likes to stay loyal to his players.

Just realised this is the Son thread so won't continue the discussion here.

Regarding Mason, Poch told him he was wanted as a squad member, but Mason wanted more first team opportunities. So Poch let him go. There was no bad feelings and indeed, when Mason announced his retirement, Poch was very supportive of him.

Sure, but that's one way to get rid of a player, and probably the likely scenario if we were to dump many of the players in our squad. You don't have to walk in one day and say "piss off, we bought a replacement for you, get your things and leave". Telling an ambitious player that he's fallen to fourth or fifth choice is an amiable way to say "its probably best for your career to move elsewhere".

Anyway, Son thread, so I won't say any more about it.

I think Mason decided to leave to get regular first team football. I'm not sure how thrilled he was about that, but he had a career to build.

Chadli is a good footballer, but I'm pretty sure he was sold for reasons to do with his focus and fitness.

Wimmer just didn't turn out to be up to the required footballing standard.

And Soldado was just playing in the wrong league.

It shows players we will look after you if you commit to the club and you perform. Some players sign 5 year deals and are stuck on low wages in comparison to future pay rises for new players and team mates. I also suspect that his last deal, as it was before he was exempt from 2 years military service (which he had to do between 27 and 29 years old), was lower due to the fact we may lose him for 2 years. Now he is exempt and also has proven to be one of our galacticos he is worth a lot more to us, and to other clubs.
