I'm aware it was the round of 16 and FYI we have never got past the 1/4 finals so how does history tell us that the extra games will ruin our season when we have never played them extra games?

All we can go by is how our managers have coped with the sceanario, that's what I meant by my comment.

Almost every time when we have reached the knockouts, and still have something to play for in the league, there will come a point where the manager fields a weakened team in the EL.

This tells me they don't think we can achieve our goals in the league as well as going all the way in the EL. It has happened a lot in recent history.

Also, our best form almost always seems to come in the middle part of the season and this debate takes place every season when we're riding high and we're all feeling a bit cocky!

After the past few months my personal opinion is that there's no chance in hell this current squad is good enough to make Top 4 and also win the Europa League. I'd be flabbergasted if we made it as far as the Semis and still finished Top 4.

Man have I missed Toby. Defy anyone to show me a better performing centre back in the world over the past year. Wouldn't swap him for anyone.

My memory of the last few years has been us not resting key players in the group stage and then paying for it when out first team is dying on its ass come March/April, meaning that we have to put out players like Tom Carroll against teams like Dortmund.

Our best period in the league under Pochettino is normally always the period of time between European competition stopping and European competition starting.

To me that says we don't have the squad to do well in both. This season's CL campaign is enough to tell us that, too.

Even when we took the Europa seriously we could only get to the Quarters. It's a shitbag of a tournament and I'd much rather we get a CL place again via the league and maybe a crack at the FA Cup.

Last season our worst period came weeks after we dropped out of EL. Of course EL haters attributed this to EL even so. :banghead:

Look buddy, I'm not here for an argument so hold your head banging, you could hurt yourself ;)

If you think we can win the EL and qualify Top 4 then, good, I admire your optimism. I just think with the squad we have it is wildly optimistic, but I'd be very happy for them to prove me wrong.

Also, to clarify, I'm not blaming last season's collapse on the EL but I am saying that the extra games and travel will have contributed, as they always do, to the overall load on our players. The manager would not have played the teams he did against Dortmund if he wasn't worried about our squad's ability to last the pace, and ultimately we did burn out IMO.

I get that it was not a DIRECT consequence of the Europa League (we didn't lose to West Ham or draw with West Brom directly after a EL match) but the squad did burn out and it seems reasonable that the overall load of the proceeding months would be a key contributing factor.

Obviously Poch starting 6 first teamers in a group stage match against a bunch of Latvian postman, instead of resting them, could been seen as a bit foolish, but that's another story!

However, I think if you want to go far in the EL you have to start playing your first XI from the Last 16 onwards and I will be very surprised if Pochettino does that if we are doing well in the league. He knows we don't have the squad to do both and will therefore prioritise the league like last season.

It's all onions though mate. Be very happy if we won the EL and got Top 4, obviously.

Play kids/fringe tomorrow tonight, is my point. I don't want to drop into EL.

Even if we drop to the EL, we can keep playing the kids and fringe players. At least it would give them some game time and keep them ready should they be required to cover for any injured first teamers in the latter part of the season.

In addition, it would allow the players to get more used to playing at Wembley as we would be playing all our 'home' games at Wembley next season.

Should, however unlikely, the boys reach the semi-finals of the EL, we can strengthen the team if there is, by that stage, a strong chance of winning the EL.

Perhaps you intended this to sound slightly differently...but if we win the EL we will qualify for CL anyway, regardless of league position*.

*That is not to say I don't care whether we finish in the top four or not. I think, in terms of league position, finishing above Liverpool again (I think we will) is important. As is keeping as many of the Sky 4/Citeh out of the CL places as possible. At the same time, I want this club to be a club that wins things again. European trophies is the thing we can throw back at the Goons - and whoever it was said last year his Goon mates said they don't care about it - they bluddy do, that's why they are pretending they don't. It is only in England the Europa is treated with such contempt...largely due to prize money size. Athletico Madrid were more than happy to be successful in it and clearly used it to propel themselves forward. Despite having already bribed their way to won the CL, Chelsea and their fans were still pretty ecstatic at winning it.

I understand your argument. The problem is, their are no guarantees. No one can give a cast iron assurance that if we mug the Europa off we will win the league, or finish in the top three, or whatever. And no-one can give a cast iron guarantee that if we treat the EL seriously we won't win the league, or finish in the top three, or whatever.

Jamie Redknapp said. ““There seem to be fewer leaders and organisers like Toby Alderweireld. These days, defenders and even goalkeepers are required to play out from the back, while full backs are more like frustrated wingers.

“Defenders are thinking more about their passing stats than anything else! They are more likely to take risks and that is leading to more goals. While that is great for fans, it puts a premium on good defenders.”

Not denying the clause...

Leaked documents last week suggested the 27-year-old had a £25.4million release clause in his contract, although Tottenham strongly denied its existence.

Alderweireld added: “I signed for Tottenham for a reason and I love to play here. I see no problem there. Whatever has been written, I am only focusing on football because that is what I love to do.”
