But if they do well and Alderweireld has a good tournament, we could get more and probably sell to a team outside the premiership it's stick or twist

Keep reading these reports about Man Utd and honestly, selling to another English club is unacceptable, whether it helps us get Martial etc or not. If we want to be competiting with the two Manchester clubs then we cannot keep strengthening them simply because they offer the most money. If he leaves, which looks almost certain, then make sure that he's outside of the Premier League.

So we should take the £22m barca offered?

Yeah i would
If that was our only offer, "me too". When ever "prestige" or "pedigree" is mentioned by commentators re football clubs, what they really mean is money and power. If we have to buy that with a reduced sale of a player, could be money well spent.

Definitely not, £22m is ridiculous in this market. I would rather we just offered him around Europe or even China and sold to the highest bidder. If it comes to it, negotiate with Barcelona and get around £30-40m with someone like Rafinha or Alcacer in return. There's plenty of options out there that don't include strengthening United's weakest area with arguably the league's best defender. Walker was bad enough.

Toby only goes where Toby wants to go, can't force him to move to the highest bidder.

If city hadn't bought walker last season they'd have bought another rb and still won the league.
We however probably wouldn't have bought sanchez and foyth. With toby and wanyamas injuries i doubt we'd have got top 4.

I don't want to sell to a rival but if they are the only choice then get as much as we can and reinvest.

This is a great comment and should be the complete end point in the matter. We effectively have 2 options, United now for £50m, or United (or worse) in a years time for £25m. One allows us to reinvest, the other makes us pig sick that a rival gets one of our world class players for half their value. You can put your fingers in your ears and scream "SELL HIM TO BARCA!!" all you like, but if the offer's not forthcoming we have little choice.

The thing with waiting for Barca etc to come in is... I don’t think people realise quite how little regard the Spanish hold for the PL. Spanish clubs have won 9 out of 10 European trophies over the last 5 seasons. I don’t think Real, Barca or Atletico has lost a knockout tie to an English side over that period. The Spanish are very proud of their league, and adamant that the PL doesn’t come close. Alderweireld’s reputation to the general public in England is that of the best defender in the league. In Spain, he was backup at Atletico before being sold to us for 11.5m. Factor in their general disregard for English football in general, and you can see why he’s not held in the same regard over there as he is here.
