Depends who those players are.
If you want top quality players so you can compete as a top club, get cl football every season, win the odd trophy and fill your new 62000 seater stadium then I'm afraid you'll have to pay top players the going rate.
If on the other hand you think you can let them go, make a profit and replace them with players who are good but not as good and still achieve those goals then prepare for disappointment when the wheels inevitably fall off.
Aurier and Trippier are good but not AS good as Walker was for us.
Winks is good but not AS good as Dembele at his best.
Sanchez and Foyth are good but they're not AS good as Toby.
If we keep watering down the squad it wont end well.
We really need to make a statement, keep Toby and bring in a top player to show we're not standing still or going backwards.

Agree with the sentiment but both Sanchez and Foyth are babies in terms of CBs and look outstanding prospects.

We wouldn't have the likes of Eriksen or Dele now if we didn't try and develop outstanding prospects.

Toby is fantastic but how long he can remain at his peak is a difficult one to grasp, especially on big money 4 year deal.

That said this season he has proved his fitness season and been the rock we needed with all the injuries. I hope he gets a new deal.

Nothing to stop him signing a new 4 year deal and then we flog him if he looks like going downhill. Sell him on our terms, not his.

Firstly he has to actually sign a new deal and he hasn’t so far. Secondly he then has to agree to any transfer. If he doesn’t we will be stuck with a player we have tried to sell. Not a very happy situation.

Can't we just stick in the £25m option, but make it triggerable at the Club's behest?

assume he wants 180k per week in a 4-year contract, that's 180k x 52 weeks x 4 years = 37.44m
in today's market who can we buy for 40m?

Being realistic

I'd assume that the 4 year contract would be on mega wages and it wouldn't be until the last 18 months that we'd consider selling, at which point probably nobody would pay him what we were.

He had a great game yesterday. I don’t think he lost a header and he marshalled a makeshift defence perfectly. Especially as both fullbacks were woeful.

If it means, potentially, losing 15 million on him in the summer so be it.

It would be absolutely madness to strengthen United when they're practically on their knees in terms of top four.

If they got him and got back into the mix it would be beyond farcical.

Now saying that, they could sign another quality option regardless but they won't have the same guarantee they'll get with Alderweireld - hitting the ground running.

Just sell him in the summer, or just maybe he stays. But selling in January to a rival would be completely remis.

Not to mention our own depth would take a huge dent.

Saving 15 million for all that, not for me.

I'm not sure what Toby gets out of moving to United in January either. Sure he'll get a pay increase sooner, but if the buying club can save £15m on the transfer fee in the summer they'll probably be able to offer him higher wages. Add in United's poor form and the dressing room issues and he'd probably be better off waiting until the summer to see who the manager was and if he'd be playing Europa league football rather then champions League. In a football sense going to United could be a real step down for him.

Saying all that if United is a dream move for him he may want to go now while the chance is still there.

Imagine us selling one of our best defenders to a direct rival in january. Just can't see us doing that, would be such a smalltime move by us.

What is wrong with the Centre backs he already has ? He bought two of them and SAF was a fan of the other two. Perhaps if they received better man management, better coaching, and support, they would be good enough ?

Also I think it should be pointed out, even though Toby has had this contract situation, his performances have been outstanding and his professionalism is just top notch. Also you can really tell how much he feels for the club, i mean you dont really get players who really want to leave showing that much professionalism, passion and level of performance.

It seems to have gone unnoticed potentially.
