Imagine us selling one of our best defenders to a direct rival in january. Just can't see us doing that, would be such a smalltime move by us.

I would disagree as I dont see them as a direct rival. If the deal is best for the club then id go with the flow, though would not want to see hime leave without an equal replacement that can come in straight away.

I'm not sure what Toby gets out of moving to United in January either. Sure he'll get a pay increase sooner, but if the buying club can save £15m on the transfer fee in the summer they'll probably be able to offer him higher wages. Add in United's poor form and the dressing room issues and he'd probably be better off waiting until the summer to see who the manager was and if he'd be playing Europa league football rather then champions League. In a football sense going to United could be a real step down for him.

Saying all that if United is a dream move for him he may want to go now while the chance is still there.

I make you right. Man Utd surely won't be desperate to pay the extra to sign him in January because he's not going to be enough to make the difference between top 4 or not, that's already gone for them IMO either with or without Toby. And as you say from his perspective, other than the wages, he's better off with us until the end of the season rather than joingin that miserable dressing room. And besides, any lost wages he's got as a result of staying with us for 6 more months he'll more than make up for when he gets a bigger contract in the summer due to there being no transfer fee.

There will be a fee, £25m

Lets assume he doesn't sign a new contract. If you were him would you:

a) leave in the summer triggering your £25m release clause.
b) stay another year and leave for free hoping to get a bigger signing on fee, although you would be one year older.

All depends on who's interested imo. if a decent club wants him in the summer i reckon he's gone.

If he doesn't sign a new contract, I don't see him making it to the end of his current one. He either signs with us or he's moved on in the summer under the threat of being out of the first team again as we look to move past him and give the minutes to Sanchez and Foyth.

Should have taken the money when it was on the table.

Greed in football will be its demise.

No offers came in. Or he should have taken the contract offer?
He should have taken the contract on offer, what was wrong with it? Top 5 or 10% in terms of wages Vs. the league for a center back wasn't it?

Greed.

Do you not like making as much money as you possibly can?

But how much has he missed out on? £100k a week for 2 years. Then no guarantee anyone wants to spend £25m on a 30 year old defender in the summer. Let alone £150k.

So is he getting as much as he can or has he missed out?

Well according to these links no bid was ever made, and this ties in with reports that Woodward didn't want to buy alderweireld because he thought he was not suitable.

Fair, I suppose its the opportunity cost. Grass ain't always greener on the other side right. I understand why Toby is doing what he's doing, just wish it was different.

I have no idea about Utd coughing up the amounts banded about in the press for TA, I was more on about the contract offer Spurs put in front of him.

If I had anywhere near as much money as the average top tier Premier League player, I honestly don't think I'd be that fussed. Seems to me to be more about what somebody else is earning than any real financial motive. The thing with Toby is that he turned down a huge pay hike months ago and as a result has cost himself something around 100k per week since. The ITK has said that the contract is still there to be signed which seems odd from his perspective if he wants a big payday.

We've had 3 months of a Jan injury, a month of Davinson injury and then a Foyth injury. All that on top of a Dier injury.
Honestly we are not getting anywhere near the credit we deserve for being up there with City and Liverpool despite our ridiculous injury record this season, plus the fact we didn't add anyone in the summer.
