To be honest, I don't think a 25m releasing clause for a 29-year-old is unacceptable. Also I don't believe a releasing clause means an intention of leaving for a 29-year-old, it's just some late-career insurance:cautious:

Compromise give him the release clause but a bit higher than he wants it to be. Maybe £30m-£35m win win

I really don't care what happens in summer of 2019 in summer of 2017. We are not in same position as in 2015 now. Things change in 2 years. We would have already moved to a new stadium in 2019. So, who knows what happens then.

As long as Toby is committed to the cause for next season with new deal (even with release clause) is good enough for me now.

£25m for one of Europe's top CBs sounds like a shocking deal to me.

What happens in two years time though ? He could be on the slide, or he might want to stay and we renegotiate. I'd rather take the buy-out at that price than have him walk away now. I think by then we might be able to offer him the type of package that he wants to stay, football, wages, and he'll have been with us 4 years and might also feel more like sticking around, and we'll have Dier, CCV and 25m etc if not. Of course I'd rather not have the clause and just have him on a nice long contract, but I don't think it's a catastrophe - except other players might want one - which I do see could be a dangerous precedent.

If we agreed to a new 4 + 1 year (including £25m release clause) I cant see how that would be unreasonable.

He would be 33 years old when the release clause is activated. £25m for a 33 year old? Absolutely.

if it's good for us chances are it won't be good for him

The press seem desperate to piss on our chips, hey?!

In the past month, half our squad have gone from happy and united to all suddenly realising they can double their money elsewhere and best jump ship, all while pushing the 'champions' all the way to the finish line... apparently.

The irony is that the papers are the first to complain that the game has lost its soul and become all about the money etc. Funny that...

With that out my system, all the info seems to point at us having Toby for another couple of years whatever so...

It's quite simple, we need to pay players their worth otherwise they will move on. Levy needs to pay first team players 100-120k per week.

We have reached the stage where we will have to pay six figure weekly salaries to 5 or 6 players.

If that's still not enough to keep Toby without a release clause then we have problems as imo we should not go down that road. I don't see why he'd insist on that anyway if we make him one of our top earners.

The spine of the team I'm quite happy to pay £100k a week:

Lloris
Toby
Eriksen
Kane

There are several others who deserve plenty as well but by far the most important thing for player retention is to win something. Money is attractive to players but becomes especially so if they aren't seeing any tangible reward in terms of trophies for their loyalty.

Next season could be make or break with several players in terms of whether we win something or not.

Yep.

120k pw x top 8 first teamers is £50m rounded.

£50m as a % of £250m (conservative) is 20% - well below the healthy 50% ratio max.

Some will be on more and some less and obviously we have other squad players but quick maths show we can easily do it.

Our turnover will be a lot more than £250m soon too

If it was that simple we wouldn't have a problem.

Don't pretend you know finance mate.

What are your qualifications ?

£250m turnover allows us wages up to £125m on how we seem fit.

Our turnover is more likely closer to £300m this year too with the new TV deal, CL and FA cup.

i think it is that simple
we are very profitable, our average attendance will probably double next season
we need to pay players a lot closer to what they can get elsewhere
Really Kane and Alli should be looking at 150k
Rose, Hugo, Toby should be on at least 100k

How much money are we set to gain from the CL, new TV deal and the FA Cup?

The attendance might well double, but with the cost of renting Wembley, and then do we get a cut of any food drink sold?
Do we know what the ticket prices will be next season?
There are plenty of things to take into consideration for next season
