Am i the only one that thinks martial might not improve us that much?

I think he’s the ideal type of “backup” that we need for Kane, rather than someone whose strictly a 9. When Kane goes down you can plug Martial or Son up top and still allow them to stay sharp playing on the wings when he’s fit.

Doesn't really matter on the price, if we sell Toby to Utd without a player we clearly want (Martial) in return, then we have well and truly been bent over in my opinion.

Even if he doesn't do great (and Utds defensive record is pretty solid regardless) it's showing a sign of weakness.

I fear this is going to happen. With the prices being jacked up on incomings Levy will just sell him to the highest bidder...

Yep. But now i have bale in my head. Which goes against everything i've said in this thread.

Financially it is a no go. But i want him now.

The only other option is to sell him for a shitload...buy de Ligt for a bit less and then spunk the rest on someone like milinkovic-savic. Go all out for two big signings rather than spreading it around. Sell off players that aren't needed to make up for it (Dembele is gone, tripper?, GKN, Janssen, Llorente, etc.)

Fill any squad holes with academy players and use the money to get proper world class talent into the team.

United's problems aren't in defence, if we get over £50M from them I wouldn't be that bothered to be honest, I'd take the cash and have a Coke and a smile.

It's not but the fact about statements isn't just what it seems on the surface, it's the deeper effect it can have. Players at their current clubs don't want to see their best players moving to their rivals and you never know when it may have some sort of knock on effect. Just like how bringing quality, established exciting players can further prove current players they're at the right club.
Flip side of that deeper effect is that we don't want to be perceived as a stubborn club that out of malintent stands in the way of players. We want to be perceived as a club that makes players go "If I go there and I work my butt off, I can really get places". Prospective players should be able to come to us and not fear for they future career down the line.

I in small part agree with that. But don't act like a jealous ex boyfriend.

He played well for us and if it's over then fair enough.
Bah, I never really like him. I'm more like the bitter father-in-law who doesn't think he is fully worthy of being part of my family.

As long as we get Martial in return, I'd be (reluctantly) OK with Toby going to them. But, if we sell him to them and don't get anything in return, Levy has some SERIOUS questions to answer

Both the clubs should be worried because both are parting with some serious talent. But honestly Man Utd should be more concerned because they are letting go a younger talent and a potential world beater- with Toby they are taking a risk with an injury prone player and anyway cant give them as many years as Martial can give us.

Ofcourse all this is if a swap deal is possible.

Agreed. Mourinho selling Martial is like Mourinho selling Lukaku.

I disagree. De Gea has saved them this season, without him they would have conceded a lot more goals. They can’t rely on him performing miracles every game, they desperately need to improve their defence.

He’s not even been sold yet and it looks like the thread is going through the five stages of grief

Because we’ve all seen it before and it’s ended in tears. Carrick, berbatov, Walker. All players we sold, didn’t buy a decent replacement for and were weaker for it but the teams we sold them to were massively strengthened.

The player might only want Man U but we must tell him he can only leave abroad this window like we did with Modric when he wanted to go to Chelsea. Either Toby will move abroad now or stay for another year.

We might as well not bother if we sell to Man Utd. What’s the point trying to progress then improving a direct rival. It’s not like it was when we sold them Carrick. We are as good a team as them now. Selling them one of the best defenders in Europe only lets them pull further away from us.

Agree if we really want Martial and the press rumours are true that Utd are refusing to sell him to another premiership club then I would have thought its quite simple we refuse to sell them Toby.

I like the idea of Martial, but I don’t like him enough to warrant selling them Toby in exchange. Toby is a world class CB and I don’t think we should be selling that level of talent to a direct rival.
