I think we need to keep our best players, but the ethos at the club also demands that they actually want to stay and play for Tottenham. It's this spirit that has helped us overachieve year after year.

If his heart is not in it, I don't think Pochettino will want him. Which is a shame, as he's been an excellent defender, leader and forged a great partnership at the back for us - but like those before him, if he doesn't want to be here then it makes it very difficult to justify keeping him.

There are exceptions to that rule; A.Sanchez pulled his weight at LeScum despite clearly agitating for a move, Mahrez made it through much of the second half of the season in good form, whilst David De Gea hasn't looked back after the Madrid transfer fiasco.

I'll be surprised if he stays.

I don't believe we are overachieving, we are seeing a very well planned strategy starting to come to fruition. Sure, there have been road bumps, and we don't have the mega oil money, for which I'm extremely happy, but we have a squad that can match the very best in the game, and have proven it. The mental maturity needed to sustain the growth on the field is getting stronger every game. I've followed this team for more than 5 decades, and I've never been this excited for the future of this club.

I would love for Toby to stay, but equally I'm not fussed if he ends up with Maureen at Manpoor, or any other EPL team. We are a better team than them, we have, as you pointed out, a great team/club ethos. (y)

Keep him, pay him a salary in line with the other players (and extend his contract) and use the funds we were looking for to buy a world class central midfielder.

He is one of the best centre backs in the world. De-Ligt is potentially going to be a top player but at the moment is a prospect.

Just need to get this decision made. Unfortunately it will now be on hold until after the world cup, but if you look at the ITK, i think there is a chance that we could repair the relationship.

Surely based on the rather strong positive correlation between average wage and League position, we’re outgunning the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool and prior to that Man City also?

I agree with you.

As far as finances are concerned we are over achieving.

But in regards to quality of players and setup we are slightly overachieving but that’s it.

Selling players once they want to leave in their latter years for a premium price and reinvesting that money in the next quality players coming through is a good system.

It means we don’t get an ageing squad and we get to develop top quality players in a way that is beneficial to us.

With regard to our financial strength I agree with you, my point (poorly made because of a beer-addled brain) was in relation to the team's performances.
