Why would they spend 40 mil on a back up to Pique (their captain)?

I don't know, maybe they see the value in having more than 2 quality centre backs. It wouldn't necessarily need to be £40 million either, £30-35 million would give Levy a decision to make. Bayern is another possibility as well with Boateng injury prone/past his best

They have 3 quality CBs as they just bought Lenglet from Sevilla. Barca currently have Hummels, Martinez and Sule at CB. All these clubs want a player like De Ligt, rather than Toby.

Fair enough, didn't know about Lenglet. Hope you're right anyway

De Ligt plays against poor quality compared to that of Champions League class. He looks a prospect but shelling out £50m for potential when he could fall by the wayside isn't worth it unless he has genuine stardust in their boots.

For me Pavard & De Ligt are the hottest young prospects defender wise at the moment yet neither were well known this time last year & I bet this time next year there'll be 2 other unknowns that will be touted as the next big thing for £50m. We target class now over quantity, it makes it a harder buyers market with a smaller poor, higher risk and bigger competition from better quality rivals. We are in a market very few clubs find themselves in compared to the others and it comes with its positives and it's clear hinderances. I'd be more annoyed if we settled for plan C's & D's last minute than holding firm on the current teams prospects. We have to hold off until the small pool of class does open up for us, it's the only way we can move forward

I wonder if the "be brave" stuff was about keeping Toby knowing we'd make a loss on him once the release clause is activated? Straws, grasping etc.

De Ligt was pretty well known this time last year...? He started a freakin Europa league final at 17. Along with that Sanchez guy we got.. Not sure what you're trying to get at exactly. De Ligt was clearly our top choice CB this summer and he will be next summer, along with City, Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern, etc.

De Ligt wasn't a very well known name compared to now, that's how it goes. I started watching Pavard in January for Stuttgart &I now he's a World Cup winner. The point is some players are touted as the next big thing and then don't reach their fullest potential. If you always pay full whack for potential you'll end up losing more times than you win

You were gung ho over freaking Sander Barge like 2 days ago. Theres one thing on taking risks on the biggest talents in the world..De Ligt, Ousmane Dembele, Mbappe, etc. and another on players that look good in a few games like Nkoudou, Njie, etc. De ligt at 19, at his potential is absolutely worth that price, when you consider he could be with the club 10+ years. Would look like a steal.

I wasn't gung ho for him, I liked that we were potentially interested in raw potential for the fees being rumoured. De Ligt played 11 domestic games for Ajax the year before last, and last year played 33. Im glad you mentioned Ousmane Dembele as he went for silly money based on his potential yet he's being rumoured of not having what it takes and being linked with loan moves away.

We aren't Barcelona, we aren't even Atletico Madrid. We are the lowest on the food chain when it comes to the top clubs in Europe, bar the Serie A teams who up until recently were financially on their knees and we are a cut above all the others that wouldn't be able to attract genuine class to their club unless they were chucking money at them. We have nor the status of the clubs above us and the £££ of the clubs who can compensate for not being as big or in the Champions League. For £50m we need the real deal or to be absolutely certain that the class of player and his character fits tightly within what we require to continue moving forward.

There are so many wonderkids that don't make it, there's every chance De Ligt will make it and just as much chance he could be just another Freddy Adu. Wonderkids for the kind of money Juventus, PSG & Real Madrid can afford to risk should they fail doesn't fit our financial model, nicking them for the kind of money that Foyth etc cost us does. We have to be more shrewd than forking out huge money for players that might fail to deliver when it comes to the pinnacle of the game

Be brave was clearly putting all our faith in the same first eleven plus a smattering of youth to get through the season without any injuries or tiredness. We get key injuries early on and we’re fucked IMO.

When did he say that?
On the social media site that A&C loves so dearly but shall not be named!

He did also add that he may still go - (which is reasonable considering the window is still open abroad).

I would doubt we would be happy to sell this unless a mega offer comes in due to lack of cover.

I just hope we can give him a few weeks to get right before we throw him back in. He needs to get to 100% again.
