I think the alderweireld/ Sanchez argument is a balancing act. I think Sanchez offers more and gives more balance in a 4 with his recovery pace and power. But Toby is obviously a better passer. I think it will be nice to hopefully have the option this season. Also should mean with rotation we can keep all 3 fresh.

He will be here after close of window in Europe. UNLESS an absolute RIDICULOUS bid came in. And even then I doubt it-UNLESS senseless money

That's good news and it will become great news if he stays long term and stays healthy. One thing about his game that's so enjoyable is how well he anticipates where the ball is going to go. He is often so far ahead that he collects the ball in acres of space and then distributes before pressure is put on. Contrast that to other defenders who don't anticipate as well. They either receive the ball under greater pressure or get there after the opposition has gotten it forcing them to defend and sometimes launch into desperate dives (Aurier for one). He isn't perfect but his thinking game is so strong that he doesn't have to make the sensational plays because he knew how to make things look mundane. Hope he regains that step.

Yep. In his first season with us particularly, apart from his debut when he gave away a penalty he made the right decision on the pitch 99% of the time.

I think Sanchez has been a brilliant signing, but I still maintain we wouldn’t have lost that Juve game with Toby in the side.

Can we not just worry about playing the best we possibly can this season? With that mindset, should we start dropping Eriksen as well? Lloris?

Are their contracts up this coming summer?
Yes it is a mind set thing. I want sustainable long term success.
Others want it right now, and principles or longer term considerations be damned.

And you think this will persuade them to stay? To suddenly bench them? How is poch supposed to explain that? It would cause a major implosion which would see 1 or 2 others also leave.
Best thing to do is pat em on the back and tell em to go out their and win the damn trophies they want.

And how do you know what is going on...really? Negotiations are taking place im sure but u make it sound as though u know whats happening

When a player gets to his final year, then there is either a major problem with renewal or the club are indifferent at best.
There haven't been new owners and our manager is one of longest serving in the prem.
The situation hasn't changed from last summer or the one before when they couldn't reach agreement.

In that context I'd love to know how posters can be so sure that negotiations are on going, and why they feel so optimistic that at this late hour there will be a break through.

Vertonghen was supposedly at the point of signing a contract earlier this year, but then there was silence. Maybe we have another year extension we can trigger, but I've not read it. Wrong thread oops.

Be great if he stays past the European window, but really we need him to sign a new contract or he will probably be shipped out in Jan.

I suspect he will either be sold in January or sign a new contract. I can’t see us letting the current situation pan on past then.

Sign him up, another amazing performance. He's such a calming presence back there. The Belgian duo is back to their best.

Absolutely magnificent in second half. Definite motm if wasn't for Moura. Play the Belgian duo in all the biggest games, and harder away games and rotate in Sanchez for all the other games for Jan or Toby. Get that contract sorted now.

He was magnificent throughout the game not just in patches. He IS the difference in defence.

Time for Levy to place his pride where it belongs. Give Toby the contract he deserves.
