But the stats are there we don’t have dominant CB anywhere near the top 3. And it shows how we generally defend crosses couple with lloris flapping.

Not sure I'd quite put it down to missing a real presence in the air as we had the same defenders and same defensive setup (bar Walker) when we had the best defence in the league 2 years running, we weren't conceding as many from set pieces then.

Maybe a bit of mental fatigue and lack of concentration from our defenders but we are good enough to deal with set pieces, we've proved it before.

Personally thinks Toby once again has been unbelievable so far this season. Especially considering his situation at the club atm.
The absolute professionalism he shows is admirable imo.

Has he even missed a game yet this season? Who would have thought that in the summer, we bascially thought Toby was done, none the less he has played so good thus far and i remember so very vital blocks and clearences for other defenders fuck ups in the last few games.

Yes he has not been at the same level, but his level is still very high. And when you have fullbacks in Trippier and Davies and a GK in Lloris, yeah not even VVD could keep up with that.

Love for him to sign a new contract at Spurs, just because his father is an idiot, he doesn't seem to be.

I agree and also he has been quite professional in the way he has conducted himself etc. Even when we score you can tell he is invested into this

So if the front page is to be believed that he wants £150k a week then surely we should be looking at offering him that regardless to what has happened in the past.

150k is a pretty fair wage for someone of his quality and experience

It would also put us in charge of his future, so if we do want to sell in future we can decide where he goes because atm next summer he could end up anywhere including arsenal if he wants ( and obviously the clubs want him ).

Just seems the sensible thing to do imo

For me though if he gets that so should vertonghen, i think he has been a better centre back even when toby has been around and he has been a longer serving player. You up the wages for one it has to happen for most of them .

Sell him.

Its not popular, but we have to sell to buy. And selling a bunch of spare parts will only bring in enough money to buy more spare parts. Liverpool financed their latest purchases by selling Coutinho - we can't expect to be any different in terms of having to sell good players to be able to afford to buy other good players.

Agree it’s also how Dortmund & Atletico Madrid deal in the transfer market and they both seem to be doing ok in there respective leagues. But I suppose the big difference is they both have some of the bests scouting networks in the world and bring in and develop prospects on the the cheap not sure how good our scouting network is to be able to follow those two clubs models

Difference is Liverpool don’t piss about when they have money to spend. They are prepared to “overpay” in order to secure their targets.

We on the other hand.... well I don’t need to explain as we all now how we roll.

As much as I rate and like him I think selling players at the right time is important.

We have Jan, Sanchez and Foyth all ready to play.

Shame we didn’t sell him in the summer.

When we sold Bale we bought replacements pretty swiftly:

We may not get that much for him, and if we try to push it he will probably wait and leave for 25 mill in the summer.

But agree that the cupboard is pretty bare in terms of high value players we might be prepared to sell, so it's looking quite grim if we must continue to zero net spend.

We did, but a) that was a world record transfer fee received at the time and b) we had Baldini there doing his thing. By all accounts he was very effective at getting deals over the line. I don't have the same confidence our current set up can get the deals done we need, even if we have money to spend from sales.

But we’ll only be getting £25m for him which is peanuts.

He’s still far better than Sanchez and Foyth ( who everyone is going overboard with atm ).

Just don’t think it’s worth losing him to our squad.

Maybe but Sanchez is ready to start now and Foyth needs some game time to continue to develop.

Seems a good time to sell him.

Not for me mate, imagine right now having a two off Sanchez and Foyth as our main 2 CBs with Verts injured.

Foyth is good but I think he needs at least another season or 2 before contemplating being someone to count on.

Would love to keep our current 5 CBs for another 2 years then replace both Verts & Toby with Sanchez, Foyth and a new left footer.

All opinions though

Sure, I rate Alderweireld and will be sad to see him go but we know he is leaving at some point.

Sanchez can already start and Foyth can play. This is a chance for them to step up.
