How would people feel about Toby staying for a year to see out his contract then return to Ajax on a free to finish out his career with them? We’d miss out on the £26M but we’d get another year of him at his peak before he goes. Best all round solution for me.

Said it before in this thread or another - if Poch wants to bin him then that's one thing. But if another club wants to sign him this summer then (on realistically no more than a 3 year contract, maybe only 2, with negligible resale value) then they would need to cover the £25m = £8.3 per season (approx 180k pw) plus give him a contract substantially better than we can offer. If we offered 150k pw then that implies another club effectively paying him towards 400k pw (e.g. 200k offer + the 180k pw fee)

Not saying it won't happen but ask yourself who is going to pay that
Not how it works mate, they don't have to weigh up their offer vs our offer, they have to weigh up their offer vs what it would cost for them to get another equally talented CB. And 25m + 200k/w is below market value.

As I say, due to him being 31 in 10 months he has virtually no resale value. It is not comparable to most others e.g De Ligt, who might cost £50-60m + 200k pw but has 10+ years left playing. That 50-60m or indeed more is retrievable unless he had a huge drop in form or a bad injury

VVD was 26 when he went to Liverpool so there was plenty of time to get some money back if it didn't work out

Great player but for whatever reason, maybe contract ‘rumours’ I’ve never really warmed to him.

Would love to resign him.

He's experienced, quality and is settled at our club (kind of).

It would also save us another signing in a summer that is gearing up to be a busy one.

PS And while they're at it, the club should re-sign Eriksen...not that the thought hadn't crossed their minds ;)

I think Sanchez and Foyth are both seen as the long term replacements for Toby and Jan. I think Jan will leave after next season (he's 32 now) so it would be great if can convince Toby to stay and partner him for one more season.

Sanchez and Foyth are miles off the level of security that Vertonghen and Alderweireld currently provide though. I'm not sure that's partnership that would give me ease of mind to be honest, unless both really do start to cut out mistakes.
