Only a week left of the clause isn't there? Seems strange for him to have gone with the squad. Unless there really isn't anyone in for him.

We may want him gone but (a) is there a club willing to activate his release clause and (b) would he go to that club?

One week left for his release clause to be activated. Wouldn't surprise me if he's already decided to go on a free next summer.

I would rather keep him for another season than lose him for £25m.

Gives us another season to find a replacement and he showed last season he is stil willing to put in 100%. On his day he is still one of the best CBs in the league, £25m isn't going to replace that.

If that’s the case, along with Jans ‘a age and Foyth being transitioned to full back, we need at least two new centre backs. I see Lyons-Foster and Tanganga on your so maybe they’re being looked at, but I’d be very concerned if we lost Toby without replacing. People might say Dier but he’s been in midfield for a good while, and is another with little time left on his contract. We’re in danger of going from very strong at centre back to very weak.

Not just at CB. All through the whole defence.

With the overhaul at full back, I'm surprised we didn't just take the option of letting him play his last year out, albeit as more of a rotation player. We have had plenty of value out of him on a really low fee and wage for his abilities even if he left for nothing.

We've known long enough ago that we need to make peace with him leaving, and I think Sanchez and Verts should be great, but if either got injured I'd be very worried. Dier and Davies are emergency CBs rather than specialists. Surprised we didn't pull the trigger on Andersen if we were set on selling him this summer.

I like the logic but I think the club is becoming very ruthless, this is like the night of the long knives.

Can’t want him gone that bad if he’s gone on the tour. Surely we’d have left him at home to explore other opportunities, like Rose.

I think you and others are being too rigid with the info...we defo want him gone but obviously if there are no takers at our terms then he stays and also him going on tour is as much of a benefit for him as it is to us and especially if there arent takers...we will see

I appreciate the sentiment, but that’s easy to say when you don’t control the club finances.

If we were offered a one year loan on Toby for £25million plus wages - would that appeal to you? I doubt it.

Unfortunately I still think the club would rather take the £25m and reinvest it in a new centre back, on a 5 year deal.

Can’t really get my head around the defensive approach this transfer window. At the the beginning, I thought it was clear that we were going to fully focus on the midfield (our biggest weakness last season) especially as it seemed like Eriksen was leaving. We’d bring in NDombele, Lo Celso, and maybe Ceballos and that would be the center of gravity for our window.

Our defense was solid but aging and we probably could use an improvement at RB, but we still had good depth there. We’d bring in Sess to learn under Rose and Davies and be a general utility player. If Toby really made a fuss, we’d rely on Dier next season. Then next summer’s transfer window, with another year of assessing our younger players on the back line like Sanchez, Foyth, KWP, and Sess, we’d make the appropriate NDombele-esque signing and spend the summer addressing the backline like we addressed the midfield this summer.

Selling Toby, Rose, and Trippier (479 Spurs appearances between them) all at once with Sessengnon as the only really feasible open-source link at the moment is very risky. I hope we get some new links soon otherwise next season we are going to be massively relying on KWP, Foyth, Davies, and Dier for backline stability and depth. I like all those players, but it makes me nervous. Pochettino sees them everyday, so his judgment is much more important than mine.

Yea, I understand that. Personally, I would rather we keep him for the next 12 months. Gives us time to bed a new partnership and find another youth to join.

I wonder how keen Toby is to leave this summer himself? Apart from Roma there hasn’t been mant rumours at all. It really baffles me that United are about to splash £70-90m on Maguire (or whatever it is) om Maguire when this guy is available for £25m

Surely we would have to.
We can’t start the season with only Verts and Sanchez as CB‘s with Foyth, Dier and Davies, assigned to other positions who can „fill in if required“.

Strikers win games, Defence win leagues!!
