That is a shame but unfortunately we can't afford to have perma-crocks in the squad so that's probably it for him and Spurs. He was fab in his first season.

Yeah it's now clear we need 2 additions in CM quite urgently. A DM and a playmaker imo.

A new Parker/Sandro and Modric combo would be nice.

A playmaker for me is almost just as important. Whilst Winks coming back is a massive boost in this regard i still feel we're lacking someone who can play from deep or a rotatible option in this mould. If we added 2 quality options (optimistic i know) in this area we'd be able to push on IMO.

He's never been a progressive passer though, he's always been safe with the ball. Dier was definitely capable of more on the ball.

Don't agree, he takes less risks with the ball than Dier but his use of it is/was excellent. Dier will try more passes to open up a defence but sometime will fail, Wanyama will try less but his pass rate would be more accurate.

Only when the opposition stood off him though. The thing about Wanyama was he could be under pressure and still play a forward pass. There was no great vision, but he used it efficiently and more importantly released it far quicker than either Dier or Dembele.

Other players may have got the headlines, but he was arguably player of the season the year we came 2nd.

Your second sentence was what I mean.

The club knew this was the situation. The failure to sign a CM is beyond baffling. Not as if Dembele and Winks are a picture of fitness either.

It's definitely the defensive midfield role that we're lacking in with the Wanyama issue, so I agree there. I like our other centre midfield options though in Winks with Onomah, Amos and Skipp coming through too. I think we're well sorted for ball playing centre midfielders. I would much rather invest in a destructive DM along with another number 10 rather than another 8.

The DM needs to have those Wanyama qualities from the season before last. What a beast he was, such a shame he is so often injured now though.

If Winks gets another 4 month injury you would seriously be comfortable with Onomah, Amos & Skipp?

Well no I said those youngsters coming through which means we're covered for the future. We still have Dembele for this season. I certainly dont like to think about such injuries happening to anyone but we deal with those IF they happen. No point speculating about that scenario though as anyone could potentially get a serious injury.

We'll always be a fringe team if we are comfortable with that.

Why? Onomah and Amos are only 1 year younger than Winks and already 1 year older than he was when he made his debut. Next season Skipp will be only 1 year younger than Winks was.

We're not even a fringe team now so that's a nonsense comment to make. This is the process under Pochettino to develop youngsters and integrate into the first team. I'm surprised people don't believe in it. Why people don't think youngsters can take us to the next level I really dont know. Especially when you consider the rise of the likes of Alli, Kane and Sanchez. Hell even Eriksen was only 21 (same age as Onomah and Amos) when he signed.
Agree to disagree that would be sufficient.
Just a difference of opinion. I'm not going to complain if we go and sign a top number 8 by any means, but I do believe in our project. It surprises me that people overlook Winks as our long term number 8. He has been excellent already and proved himself in top games in the league and Champions League. I think people are obsessed with new signings on here.

I've seen nothing from Onomah to show he is good enough for this level, and I'm not ready to crown Skipp or Amos after a few preseason games.

Winks still has yet to complete a full season, so I'm not ready to crown him and I'm also not satisfied with having 1 senior level CM. Has nothing to do with an obsession for signings, its a genuine need. And with our supposed summer transfer targets Poch agrees.
