He's at his level with Southampton. Decent player with a good engine but someone who according to Saints fans trudges about for a while before conveniently turning it on in big games.
Remember you have to consider that they're a bit cold on him at the moment because he's refusing to sign a new contract, and clearly wants to leave, so opinions are a bit skewed.

He'd give us a great option when we need to close a game out, that physical presence and height would have been just the ticket second half against Chelsea.

Because he doesnt want to be there, his performances up until they stopped him joining us were very good.

Think he could be this years Toby.

In the sense that a lot of our fans are not too keen on him and think he's overrated.

But fast forward a year and that view has changed dramatically!

I will always have a soft spot for Wanyama from his Celtic days. An absolute beast during his time here and I remember recommending that he would be a good buy especially when we were linked with Scott Brown instead..

Will never forget that night against Barca in the CL. Unforgettable experience

Not sure I would want him for the money that Saints would probably demand. I don't mind a limited footballer so much when their job is to primarily break up play and they do it well but I think he'll be too expensive.

He was excellent against us at the Lane. Ate up all the space infront of the beck four and gave our creatives no space to work in, won all the physical battles. I'm not sure he's ideal, in terms of receiving the ball in tight spaces, for a front foot team like us, who don't sit deep, but would certainly give us that physicality in the centre of the park we miss so much when Dembele is out.
So was Townsend, should we resign him?

He only has one year left on his contract. We're the last team Southampton want to be dealing with obviously, but if they're looking to recoup any money before his contract expires they might not have a choice.

Eric Dier is better than him so can't see this happening.

I don't think there's any doubt about that. But, we need a capable backup to Dier. I don't think Wanyama is that player (Read: Dendoncker is), given I think he'll be too expensive and quite frankly I'm not as convinced of him having a much higher ceiling than what he's currently playing at.

Whilst I personally think there are better options out there (see Dendoncker), I can see this one being the one we go for. Poch likes players he trusts and with Prem experience. Levy likes players with a year left on their contracts...

Lower on the list of players that I think are 'acceptable' purchases this summer. Agree with @Sweech we should go back in for players of potentially a higher overall quality like Kramer or a Bender or someone of that ilk. But...for the right price, I would be happy with Wanyama.

He would be an extremely shrewd signing. Played for Pochettino before so knows his system and would be great cover for Dier
