The

Llorente isn't blessed with pace but his brain is quick.

Ultimately I think Janssen would've adapted better with more playing time but I also understand why Pochettino was reluctant to take that risk. I hope he does well on loan but he clearly hasn't convinced our manager that he's worth persisting with.

I think Janssen got a tough ride to be honest, but I'm not heartbroken about the situation either. It is what it is. Back up strikers will never be as good as the first choice. I think Llorente probably is a wiser old cookie (you'd hope so with his CV) but we also play a system that needs energy and sacrifice and I can't see Llorente excelling there, whereas Janssen always worked his nuts off and was pretty unselfish, sacrificing his natural game to play the system IMO.

Shame we couldn't get him a domestic loan, but for his own good I think he had to move on - for this season at least. I still think there's a player in there.
He was back up to swans if Bony deal failed for whatever reason. There were inquiries, but nothing firm, aside from Brighton. And that was Paul Barber's doing, as they were failing in their pursuits for strikers. Says a lot really doesn't it.

Against good sides I agree. Against teams we dominate possession wise and park the bus our pressing is far less important. Sometimes a battering ram/target man is more the way to go than an energetic all action player up top.

Do you know if it's just a loan? Do they have to buy him or is there any chance he will come back?

Really should've gone to Brighton. He's gonna be playing in a pub league that is of a lower standard than the Dutch league he came from.

He certainly won't develop as a player over there. It's a footballer's graveyard for players who are over the hill. I'd say this is probably the end of Janssen at Spurs now.

Is a shame though. So many of his shots, when featuring... were inches from being goals. I do wonder what could've been. I think he was given a fair crack of the whip - those chances just never seemed to go in though.

Aye, starting with the toe poke from 6 yards out in a goalmouth scramble on his debut (against Palace, I think?) If that had dribbled in, you never know.

Soldado has been "liking" Janssen's tweets on Twitter about joining Fenerbache. Imagine those two have had a lot of conversation in direct messaging over the last year. Parallels were uncanny. A lot in common. Just couldn't buy a goal. Again, often a matter of inches at times.

I disagree. I think the high press is more important in those bud park games as it's how you catch them before they are set up.

I don't mind a target man if their hold up play is good and they enable others, but we are not exactly a team that gets to the byline and hit loads of quality crosses. And that's especially difficult when a team is sat deep not allowing any space behind.

It's a real knockback for him in his career, especially after having done so well in the Dutch league. He probably thought it would all take off for him when he came here and now he's facing the possibility that his career is already on the wane. I feel sorry for him. Hopefully he can still make it.

Whatever way you look at it, our recent history of striker purchases is getting worse with every player we buy.

Hopefully Llorente bucks the trend - at least he's proven in the PL, as well as the rest of his career.

Just think if a couple of those close calls had gone in then he would have been a good player. Best of luck VJ, at Spurs or elsewhere!

Maybe not with traditional wingers, but we have fullbacks who are all capable of finding Llorente's head from wide, particularly when we're dominating possession against the bus parkers and they're effectively wingers anyway and a playmaker who loves to play those lofted balls-cum-crosses from the inside right channel.

I can see a lot of goals against the 'bus-parkers' this season coming from Eriksen in space on the inside right, where he always finds space, finding the head of Llorente at the far post, ala his number of similar assists for Dele the last two seasons. The difference is that he doesn't have to wait for the movement from Llorente, like he does with Dele, he can just play it in knowing that Llorente is hardly going to lose a header through height and brute strength.

This is also one of the reasons I can see us playing with Eriksen behind both Kane and Llorente at times. Kane will naturally occupy one of the CB's allowing Llorente isolation on the other instead of both challenging him at the same time. With the class Eriksen possesses I would back him to put in a ball that advantages Llorente 9 times out of 10 in that situation with Kane ready to pounce on any knockdowns or rebounds.

Why in the world did he not go to Brighton

Why would he? He'd probably never heard of them until a few months ago. And wasn't it rumoured to be a permanent deal rather than a loan? I can fully understand not wanting to sign away four years of your life with a team that was one of the favourites for relegation when you don't know much about them.
