Arsenal could have tied Sanchez to a new 5 year deal then sold him a year later, but chances are that they would also have had to pay Sanchez a hefty loyalty bonus.
I suspect Liverpool have paid a decent chunk to Coutinho as well as I don't believe there were any reports of an official transfer request.

Letting a player run his contract down may lose you some income in terms of the fee, but it also gets you out of that bonus payment.

He was set to sign a new contract before the 1st Bayern match in Feb last year but cause they lost 5-1 he changed his mind :ROFLMAO:

Actually saw potential structure of Sanchez deal which apparently has been agreed is £20m transfer this month £15m to player or £30m to player in summer. £15m for sitting out 5 months is a bit of a no brainer. If I’m a half decent player at a top club, I would never have a contract past 28. Ok bit of a gamble with injury. But as long as you’re fit you stand to make £15-30m plus probably a higher wage it’s an absolute no brainer.
