Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino will not select Toby Alderweireld just to help him secure a place in Belgium’s World Cup squad.

Football is & always should be a meritocracy; Toby has been injured quite seriously & needs to build himself back up to the levels of his team-mates. I don't believe his contract wrangling has endeared him to the staff either because who is going to want a player who is not at optimum level & is looking for money?

This year Vertonghen has been our best defender & when he's not there he's been a big miss. I'd much rather look at the likes of Stefan De Vrij on a free, or another young, well-scouted CB, than pay over the odds on Toby's contract.

A fully fit fully committed Toby easily gets into our best side. Let's hope he plays in the cup semi-final and final. Lift a trophy Toby and you'll get to world cup for sure.

De Vrij is a decent prospect but Toby is the real deal. Get him fit and firing every week and we've got a huge asset.

His replacement was bought last summer.
What was odd was that Alderweireld was not sold at the same time, and I can only think he refused, despite this being a World cup year.
Any of the big clubs would have made an offer if his agent went touting him, so something sinister is being played out here imo.

Nor should he, it's up to TA to show he wants to play & is fully committed & from Poch's comments you'd have to say Sanchez & Verts are looking the biz in training.

Why is that odd? the circumstances were entirely different in the summer.

Could not agree more, undefeated in the PL this year should mean that any player returning from injury has to fight his way back into the side.

Sanchez and Jan have been pretty much faultless and you don't pay what we did for Sanchez and have him warming the bench, at least not at Spurs.

Love him to bits but at twenty nine coming thirty, Toby isn't going to get a long, expensive contract.

Maybe Levy should pay Spurs what they are worth. We cannot get by, by underpaying players anymore we want Champions League and trophies. Players like Alderweireld, Dembélé, Eriksen, Son and Kane deserve to be paid more for a start. Levy is the highest paid chairman in football so when our players could be paid so much more elsewhere how can he say no to their wage demands. Mid-table is calling if we continue to pay players less than what they would get elsewhere.

So how did we get to be a top 4 team consecutively and have one of the most wanted managers in world football that come out with comments that commit him to us, Harry Kane's comments also commit him to us. Our sensibleness has been lauded repeatedly but we need to now stop doing the things that got us above mid table? We don't have the resources of teams that regularly win trophies or compete in the latter champions league yet. We need to keep doing the sensible things that got us were we are, an exciting prospect on the verge of bigger things. I wouldn't like to risk our long term future for those bigger things, hopefully they can come if we keep doing what we can afford and not worry about what others can afford.

If only we’d thought of that before. Simples. Just pay them the money. We know Levy was never intending to relocate to the London Stadium, not when he discovered an oil well beneath the old WHL.

I wrote here last year that TA was happy at WHL and willing to extend his contact for a fair offer. I was told his family wants to stay in London so if not at Tottenham we risk losing him to Chelsea or Arsenal.
