Pochettino has vetoed Tottenham Hotspurs’ proposal to appoint a new sporting director with the manager eager to retain a significant influence over transfers. The club are understood to have assembled a shortlist of potential candidates to replace the former head of recruitment, Paul Mitchell, but have abandoned the process after talks between Pochettino and Daniel Levy, the chairman. Many of Mitchell’s functions have been taken by the chief scout Steve Hitchen, who reports to the club’s football committee of Pochettino, Levy and the academy manager John McDermott. Tottenham’s willingness to bow to Pochettino’s wishes will increase their chances of keeping hold of the in-demand Argentinian amid interest from Real Madrid.

I'm a fan of the DOF model and I think there is good argument for saying we need one, having spent 70 million on Llorente, GKN, Sissoko and Janssen. But Poch seems worried he won't have a significant say over transfers. As what he says goes, it would be wrong to disregard his opinion. Maybe if we had appointed one more rapidly, he might have been for it.

Gotta trust Poch. I like having DoF too. Just someone who has the authority to get a transfer across the line.

Poch always will be busy with the team. Levy still has alot on his plate with the stadium.

But i do admit... it aint easy to find a player to fit into our ethos. If Poch feels he need a control over signings then so be it. I rather we go all out for a player he wants. Rather then go down a list and end up with 4th or 5th choice.

I doubt it's quite as blunt as a veto, much more likely that the situation is working well enough and Levy trusts Hitchen and Pochottino and so may be ready to run with it, no doubt that suits Poch better too.

I'm not a fan of the Sporting Director setup, and prefer the manager to choose his signings. We're more likely to get players that suit us that way.

Always believe the manager should be in charge of transfers.

That way they live or die by their own decisions and can use anything as a excuse.

This also shows that Levy has huge trust in poch and rightly so

The manager is always supposed to have the final say over transfers.

I don't mind the DOF method but here's my opinion.
DOF is excellent for getting the best in your bracket but won't raise you beyond it. Using DOF you have to match the players with the coach and vice versa, you won't get players beyond your grade without a top coach and you won't get a coach above your grade without top players and neither will stay long without the confidence the other will stick around.
Two examples are Barcelona and Seville, my understanding is that both used this system to great effect but they were not really competing.
Barcelona had top players and top coaches who would work to the Barcelona ethos although I think they are finding it increasingly harder and Seville have been very successful but have never crossed the Rubicon and stepped up to the top level and they have had quite a while to do it.
To make that step up you need something more, something long term, something to believe in, a project and for that you need a long term coach/manager.
Like we've got!

I don’t mind having a sporting director, but I don’t like one brought in when there’s already an encumbent manager. They should come in with a manger or they should he involved in the recruiting one.

I think it is Pochs choice and good for him wanting to take ownership of picking who joins his squad. I would give him whatever he wants because we should hang on to this chap, he’s awesome.

Madrid/Barcelona/PSG can all do one.

I just hope some of our less successful signings were all down to Mitchell and we sign the next 3 Dele Alli types with him calling the shots...

The present structure is working brilliant. No need for DoF.

£30m on Sissoko. 25m on Aurier. 25m on Moura. 40m on Sanchez. 12m Nkoudou. 10m Njie. 13m Llorente. 18m on Janssen.

173m and we've got one real first team regular. Youth integration has diminished. I accept that not all of those transfers, on a stand alone basis, are bad business, but that's hardly a structure working brilliantly.

And it's not a DOF, it's a head of recruitment that has been been scuppered. Slightly different.

In terms of coaching, I have immense trust in Pochettino, love his oeuvre, but his recruitment - even going back over previous clubs - is much less trustworthy. I'm all for him having a major input, in the transfer committee, but a good head of recruitment can be worth his weight in gold in this bananas market.

Agreed, because Janssen and Llorente were awesome signings and consistently got the ball across the line ..............
