It's going to be a tough one for sure, especially if England and Belgium progress - that'll be eight of our 'first-stringers' on duty. Sonny will definitely be back in a couple of weeks after a break, now that South Korea are out. Sad though it is for them, I reckon Christian and Sanchez will also be back in a couple of weeks as I think Denmark and Colombia will exit in the next few days. But England and Belgium will be the biggest problems for pre-season training, especially with the USA friendlies coming up.

We also haven't bought a single player yet, my guess is that we will do the usual late business. That will result in the new guys not having a preseason, which won't please Poch.

Have you considered the reason for no signings yet ( like many other teams ) is the World cup Poch talks about.

yes I have. This is what Poch said before the world cup.
“Sometimes you need to anticipate, ‘OK, this player can be good for us’ and then he goes to the World Cup. But you need to sign before it starts because he is doing well, or you will have competition if they are good [at the World Cup]."

Pochettino also explained that he would not want a players performance at the World Cup, alone, to determine their future. Some players will overachieve and some players will underachieve, and therefore it is not an accurate representation of the players ability.

"We are thinking and trying to anticipate. If the performance is not good at the World Cup you are going to sign players that have not performed in the way you have expected and if you are going to sign players where the performance is so good it will be so complicated.”

But it's not just the incomings and the World cup to consider is it. Outgoings play a major part also.

What about our own players who may have stated that they don't want to discuss their futures until after the World cup, focusing instead on the tournament.

Is Rose leaving, what of Dembele and Alderweireld. Do we need replacements, are they leaving.

I'm sure all managers would like the ins and outs done early doors.Seldom happens when World cup year.

All well and good for the preseason friendlies, but it won’t help when we start our season with a fatigued or un-match fit starting 11

fatigued possibly as they won't of had the 6 week rest that some have had, un-match fit they have just done their preseason in a much more competitive way by playing in the WC, with a most probably a 2 week break that will be followed up with a weeks training before KO.

after next season they are going to have a 2 week winter break, does that mean our players won't be match fit?

@Mullers perhaps we haven't signed the players we want because, Man U aren't letting us have Martial due to us not matching a price they have inflated and not wanting him to go to a competitor this early if they do let him join.

de Ligt went tits up because Man C got involved made his price go up, now Ajax look like they are leaving it for a bidding war.

if we ever had any interest in bringing Bale back, 1, Zidane got the bullet and we don't know what RM new boss will agree with Bale, and his 2 goals v Liverpool most probably put us out the market due to a bigger increase in transfer fee. ignore the wages, yes he would have to take a massive drop, but would of got a lot of that back by having all his promotions money back, and to be honest he knows whoever he joins he is never going to get what he gets at RM.

Sessegnon got promotion so now not for sale

that's 4 players there has been links with since the end, and 4 reasons why we haven't made 1

Poch would know all this already before he talked to Levy at the end of the season. I don't think people can ignore what he said, he said it for a reason and he is right too. I wouldn't like to see him pushed to a point where he might quit.

I would find it hard to believe if they were the only targets. I think Poch would have known that they were all difficult to get and discussed alternatives.

or there is also a small chance that his words "Be Brave", meant if we don't get our 1st choices then we won't get anything in those positions because they are the players we need, not someone that's not as good.

yes it would of been great to get new faces in ready for the preseason start for when they return tomorrow, but obviously if those where our main targets then we have had probs getting them, and perhaps any other targets or back ups to the original are involved at the WC

But he also said "If we want to play and be real contenders for big, big trophies, yes, we need to review a little. " Be brave and take risks in order to win trophies.

Then back to my original point he wants those players in before the world cup, if he is happy to get those players late then fine but I don't think he will be.

My understanding was those involved in World Cup squads would be difficult to finalise transfers for... That means that the likes of;

De Ligt, Kluivert, Pulisic, Pastore, Nainggolan, Icardi and Martial could have been targeted - all of whom would have improved our squad - however if we leave it until after the WC then everyone enters the rat race...

It will be very interesting to watch this play out...

I'm assuming everyone has read the article? They've just lifted a passage from Poch's book and made a story out of it. He's talking about players coming back from the WC tired etc. Nothing about transfers:

Writing in his book A Brave New World, Pochettino said: "Whenever there is a World Cup or European Championship, it makes for a tricky pre-season.

"Players report back later than usual and are often burnt out, short of motivation. You've got to try to make them feel comfortable.

"We don't drop our standards, but we don't bust any balls either."
