Pochettino: Spurs believe they can stay in title race

So what has he said in the article that was construed as him saying we can win the league?

This bit

"We don't need to be in some position like today to convince ourselves about our capacity, our potential or the possibility to win. We always believe in ourselves," said the Spurs boss.

"We are there because we believe in ourselves. Then it's if we are capable to fight until the end, to keep our position or to be close to our opponents and fight to be champions.

And this bit

"Because of our belief, how hard we work, our mentality and everything, we are there."

And those are just the quotes they bothered to use.

The beauty of Poch is to concentrate only on our performances, to play well. If we do that we can beat any team. He knows he can't control whether opposition drops points, lose form etc. So he always sends this message to his players and our fans: try hardest and believe you can do it. We may not win it but have a say in the title race until the end. If we come close, next season in the new stadium, with a much better atmosphere we will have a better chance.

You just don't say anything that can be construed as "we can win it" or "we can go all the way" or "there's a chance" etc.
They'll twist it, for sure. But they're looking to set him up to have egg on his face. Best thing is to just avoid the subject altogether.
"Can you win the title MP?"
"If we win more games than everyone else, may be?"
"Its a big gap, the teams above us would need to really break from form between now and the end"

Make all the answers about them, not us.

I totally disagree. I think Poch has got this one spot on, as he usually does when addressing the media.

We shouldn’t worry about what the other teams are doing, we can only control our own destiny. If Poch used the quotes you suggested, what does that say to our players? To me, that would say “don’t bother trying too hard as we’re only relying on other teams slipping up, which probably won’t happen”.

We just need to win our games, and if others drop points then it’s a bonus and we’ll be right there to capitalise.

That's always been Pochs mantra. Believe and stay focused on our own game. Nothing new in it. And guess what, we ARE there. We don't need to call it unlikely because everyone knows its unlikely already. The press forget about us most of the time and only mention the possibility of us winning it after we've just won a match.

Supporting the club means supporting the manager. Give him the benefit of the doubt and be on his side. He's working miracles and its still not good enough for some. It saddens me.

Both ManC and Liverpool are both headed for a points total in the 90's.
If we win all our games, including away trips to chelsea, Liverpool and Manc, then we'll gather 96 points,
which would be a competitive total for sure.

We'll all have views on how likely that is given our record against the top 5 clubs and our inability to put a such a long run of wins together this season (5), or last (6).
We got an incredible 12 wins out of the last 13 in 2016/17... but even that probably wouldn't be enough this season.
So sorry but for those reasons, I'm out.

But what is true is we are capable of upsetting any contender if they are not at their best.
We will probably have an important say on who wins the thing.

7pts behind with 13 to play isn’t a massive gap. How gritty the players have been this season surely they believe it’s possible. Maybe we as fans need to believe instead of waiting for it to go wrong.

To be honest I would consider champions league again next year, in our fantastic stadium, a great achievement and anything thing else a bonus. We still have to play the Arse, Citch, Chelski and the bin dippers. Btw if we drew today what would the press have said about our game. Spursy, legends etc.

I wont believe we are in it unless we get a result away at Liverpool or Man City or both

i think we're in a great position for the run-in, with key players due back and no expectations re the title (unlike City and Lpool).
Next season will feel different as (hopefully) the stadium excuse will have gone. Not sure how id feel if we didnt sign anyone in the summer!?
