Mauricio Pochettino has suggested that Tottenham are too big of a club to neglect the Premier League or Champions League in order to chase FA Cup or EFL Cup silverware.

I like poch a lot but can't agree with him here as EPL or CL we are not winning but the FA or league cup is more of a possibility than the other two.

A trophy is a trophy, regardless of stature of
Club. We won't win the CL or PL this season so we absolutely must commit to trying to win either the League Cup or FA Cup.

I think 8 of the last 10 League Cup finals have been won by teams finishing in the top 6.

Same for the FA Cup.

Let's face it, the League Cup (I know it's changed its name as it does so every season) and the FA cup doesn't have the euphoria it once had.
It takes too much from the team to fight on 4 fronts for trophies. Besides, finishing even 4th in the EPL and making a "good" run in the CL is by many (no, not all) rated "higher" - and well as being more lucrative - than winning any of the 2 domestic cups.
Personally I like the 2 domestic cups mainly to give a chance to test "untested" players and at the same time bring some needed revenue.

I used to be a strong proponent of trying to win the domestic cups because the point is to win things. But I think it's fair enough for a club that has reached our stature in the last 3 seasons to treat the domestic cups as a bonus competition. If the reserves perform well and the draw is kind, then we might end up at the semis and it's worth taking seriously then. But until then, we've got to rotate so that we stay competitive in the league and CL. We have plenty in reserve to beat Barnsley, and if we don't then we'll deserve to be out.

Even the FA Cup doesn't have the same prestige that it used to. Just look at the scum down the road. They've won it 3 times in last 4 years yet they're a mess with fans demanding the manager is sacked.

I'd love us to win a trophy - any trophy. However, the Haribo Cup (or whatever it's called this year) is a great opportunity to give the fring players their chance. If they see us through the first couple of rounds it would be unfair to oust them in favour of the big guns. FA Cup would be fab.

4 trophies we could possibly win, 1 a very long shot, another very tricky especially this year being at Wembley and the other 2 aren't good enough...

Even if he thinks it does he have to say it?

I don't think he has been at his PR best the past few days.

The league cup is a complete waste of time. I wish they would do away with it for PL clubs . Get rid of the Johnstones paint trophy and just let the championship and lower fight for the league cup but take away the europa league prize.

I'd be ecstatic with an FA Cup win. Still the best cup competition for me. Grass roots n' all that. CL is so far up its own arse, it's ruined domestic football (IMO, obviously)

While I get what Poch is saying, in the end history will only remember cups won... not that epic quarter finals showdown against Barcelona in which we busted out because of a magic goal from Messi at the minute 117.

That being said, for our short term success, is probably more important to establish ourselves as one of the top teams in the world, and the only way to do that is to keep qualifying to the CL on regular basis and, hopefully, to be able to win the EPL every few years. So Pochetino definitely has a point, but that doesn't mean we should ever be playing to lose.

“The project here at Tottenham is to try to win the Premier League or the Champions League,” Pochettino said. “For me, that is the two big trophies. OK, I would love to win the Carabao Cup or the FA Cup for our fans.

“But Tottenham must build a project with the possibility to fight for Champions League or Premier League. Sorry, first of all the Premier League and then the Champions League. If we are going to try to win Carabao Cup or FA Cup, and forget the Premier League or Champions, it's a big mistake.

There's nothing wrong at all with what he's said.

Top players don't go the clubs because they had won the League Cup or the FA Cup (see Arsenal). Rather they want to go the clubs that give them the opportunity to play in the Champions League.

Strictly speaking, PL clubs shouldn't be in it anyway, as the Premier League is a separate organisation from the English Football League, whose name is engraved on the trophy. But we all know that the EFL's clubs are hoping to be drawn against high profile clubs from the Prem, so the PL's clubs will not be excluded from the competition. Personally, I think PL clubs should either give the EFL Cup a miss or field their U-23 teams, so that their youngsters and fringe players get a chance to face more experienced opponents.

What I think they need to do is offer the 4th place champions league play off spot to winners of the fa cup. That'll put it back where it belongs
