I knew sufficiently little about his pre-Southampton experience and background, when his name was first proposed, that I was inclined to favour De Boer. However, the more I read about Pochettino, especially from Southampton players and fans, the more promising his appointment sounds.

What's most gratifying about it is that it happened fast: we went right out into the market, interviewed our preferred candidates, decided which one we wanted and concluded the deal within days, all before the end of May. We identified our first choice and moved decisively. None of this waiting-until-after-the-World-Cup nonsense, to see who had enhanced his reputation. No negotiating with three candidates simultaneously, until one or two of them went elsewhere.

It sets a tone.

Results of the poll are all pretty positive, it was only a couple of years back (my memory is somewhat shite) but I'm pretty sure the AVB appointment also garnered similar optimism amongst fans.

I don't think us fans are the problem, in spite of all the knee-jerking we've had over the past year or so - for me it's down to Levy and Poch.

Levy needs to back his man this time - we've had too many changes since Jol/Ramos/Arry etc. and whilst we've improved generally we've found it hard to sustain it. Backing Poch will give him confidence and in turn the team some stability and confidence too. We also need to adopt a more effective and consistent transfer policy and actually utilise the players we sign to give them the best chance of settling.

Poch needs that backing to do what he feels necessary with the squad. For me, he needs to deliver positive football. AVB quickly lost face amongst fans with his brand of football - for me, he didn't get long enough to see it through properly and the Bale sale forced us into the transfer market with a bit of wayward spending - Poch needs the backing to ensure this sort of thing doesn't happen and in turn he needs to get us playing well.

Bit of a rambling post but thems my thoughts.

I’m pleased. Benitez was my first choice but I am not sure he was ever an option. When it became clear it was between Pochettino and FDB, I kind of leaned towards the latter instinctively but then FDB obviously has no English experience and I confess to have seldom seen Ajax play.

The positives of Pochettino have been mentioned. I think that his weaknesses are the language barrier (but that didn’t seem to prevent him endearing himself to players, it’s clearly a media ploy), the lack of a plan B at times, defensive frailties (most clearly seen in both games against us, at St Marys we created a lot of chances) and just a general hunch that his teams play well at home and away against mediocre teams but come unstuck against better teams at times. They did beat Liverpool away last season which was a scalp, but they also got taken to the cleaners somewhat at home to the same and Chelsea.

The big positive, though, is the way he seems to have nurtured rather than acquired talent and I don’t want to see many players come and go this summer. We could do with a striker and obviously replace any key players that end up leaving (Lloris, Vertonghen, Sandro, Adebayor) but if Pochettino can get the very best out of the players he had at Southampton, there is no reason why he can’t do the same here.

I'm disappointed although much of that is that I think we could live to regret not getting De Boer when we had the opportunity rather than the fact we signed Poch

Today though is a new day, new manager, clean sheet, clean start. I guess we'll start to be happier or concerned as we see our transfer dealings, although quite how much impact on that any Spurs manager has is always hard to know.

Football wise unfortunately the WC will disrupt pre season to a degree and make it harder to tie up transfer deals early on, so it will make things tougher for Poch to get everyone fit, gelling together as a team and match sharp by the first game, but here the luck of the draw can play a part making it that bit easier or tougher in our early games.

I always think you need to give it a dozen games before jumping to too many conclusions positive or negative

I'm very pleased to have Poch onboard. He has managed to maximise the talent of the players he has managed, plays attractive football and is highly spoken of by his players. He's a hard task master by all accounts which will probably separate the wheat from the chaff. I also think that his perceived failings have been largely attributed to lack of options or personnel. We have a fantastically talented squad and I'm hopeful that Poch can realease the potential at hand.

I wanted FDB and i am dissapointed we did not get him, however we got Pooch as our new manager and i will give him 100% support. I really hope ALL fans will and forget who they wanted because if we do not all get behind him we could be facing this situation again in a year or so.

Like all Spurs fans I hope it works out. Levy is spinning the qualities of style of play and youth development from what I read. To be honest Poch record and experience is not as good as AVBs in my opinion. I have to say I would have been much more positive if it was FDB, but what do I know...!
PS whatever happens can we give the guy at least a couple of years.

I'm quite excited (I'm not out about to lose control, even though I might like it) - think he may turn out to be what we were looking for when we hired AVB. I hope he gets the support he needs to do his job, both from us fans and the board.

I just think it's all a bit pointless. We would have been fine IMO giving AVB the rest of last season to speed up our attacking play and could expect to finish no worse than 6th. Then he would be going into his 3rd seasomn and we could think about seeing the best football yet under him. The decision to sack AVB was more gamechanging for us than hiring/sacking Sherwood or even hiring Poch IMO.

But I hope he shows why DL gave him a 5 year contract! I think to fulfill his 5 years he would need at least 2 or maybe even 3 top 4's in there.

He'd 18 months to do that and didn't. I see your point, I'm just not sure he was working towards anything other than what we were getting.

We played well in some games, you have to give him that. It's finding consistency, and although he had 18 months already, 6 months is still a long time, a lot can change. I think we were at times seeing the worst football you could see under AVB, and we were still in touch with the top 4. Things could only go up under AVB IMO and having 5th as a base isn't bad.

fair points - it's odd though that he could hit the ground running at ZSP. I always got the impression that we were overdrilled and too cautious and as a consequence slow and ponderous - we had a very good defensive record but the balance between defence and attack was poorly managed I felt. I didn't see it going anywhere, but I see why some might have wanted him to stay on. It was never 100% clear that he was sacked, so maybe it was just a bad fit from the start. Happens.
