Initially it seems a bit underwhelming when you consider we have van Gaal and FDB in the frame. FDB is well-regarded around Europe. People talk about Poch's failure with Espanyol etc.

I never really watched Southampton play. However the consensus is that Poch would play exciting, fast-paced attacking football and FDB would be more like AVB will slow, possession based play. I don't have any ITK on this but reading between the lines, I think Levy is putting a lot of emphasis on entertaining football.

Between success and entertainment, i'd rather be entertained. So if Poch does deliver as promised, i'll be happy.

Initally underwhelmed, now I'm pleased. Excited even.

Unsure. Appointing a Manager isn't a big deal. We do it all the time and it's a bit tiring. Keeping a Manager long enough for him to do all the things we appointed him to do. That would delight me.
Need to appoint one capable of doing it first.
AVB was never that man not was Sherwood, let's hope Poch is.

A more interesting poll would be "do you think Pochettino will be in charge for the first game inside the new stadium..?"

Pochettino was initially my first realistic choice, I have been impressed with saints every time i have seen them play under him..... but i had recently been swayed by the FDB camp and the notion that he would keep our big name players happy and attract others, so it's just pleased rather than delighted for me but i'm hoping to be delighted in the near future!!

the thing is, it is always a crap shoot. unless you have the funds to buy success, you really dont know how an up-and-coming manager will work out. Most of us thought Ramos and AVB were going to be great. OTOH, Harry was viewed with skepticism in many quarters.

its the same in any sport by the way. there is a confluence of factors, many outside the control of the manager, that dictate the results. you pick a guy that you think is better than competent and hope it works out. Id say Poch's results to date suggest he is better than competent.

And then there's Lamela, the pride of River Plate's academy as a Number 10 and a prolific wide player for Roma. We now have a real chance of seeing Lamela develop into a world class talent, and he fits into Poch's system like a glove.

Poch will have seen Bentaleb's debut, and he's got other good youngsters to develop like Kane, Carroll, Milos V and Onomah.

Re the 5 year contract, call me a cynic but I can't believe there's not a DL get out of jail card, like the break clause that Levy slipped into Sherwood's 18 month contract.

Hopefully, DL will never have to exercise it. :D

Nice post, but let's not forget Pritchard as well ;)

I like the new manager and his track record handling players of all ages and experience levels. Additionally, he seems a good fit with Baldini, so maybe there will be some backroom harmony at WHL finally?.....

Nah, who am I kidding,... just jinxed it :wacky:

He's a good fit -- COYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :singing:

A bit 'meh' to be honest, the goat option is apt. I preferred the idea of FdB but more out of hope than anything else.

Realistically this may be the better appointment, Spurs have better players than Southampton and more money to spend since they got rid of Cortese, the previous owner died and new one doesn't seem that bothered. Poch seems loved by all of the players at Soton, and their fast-passing, pressing game is appealing. If he can motivate Spurs, and sort out the defence, then things will work out. Five years is a lot of compensation, and on the face of it a sign of support from the posh seats. We'll just have to wait and see how well he is backed in the transfer market; money is always there but the targets have often been 2nd or 3rd choice.

I would feel a lot better if de Boer came out now and said he didn't want the job.

His winning mentality as player and coach, being able to handle the pressure of being at a huge club already, being able to adapt and change tactics, already having knowledge and a good relationship with some of our current players.

I thought we were tailor made for him

Benitez was my 1st choice but while I am not quite overwhelmed, we could have done a lot worse than Pochettino. Saying that, I am now quite excited for the new season.

That's pretty much how I see it Bullet. I wanted someone who could provide stability and proven track record but I am excited by the potential of Pochettino, and look forward to seeing a massive improvement in the way we play.

He needs to be given time now (not just by Levy but by us the fans too); to coach the team into playing the way he (and we) want them to; to assess the ability of the squad; to move on those who do not suit the tactics (or do not want to be here); and to bring through some of the talent from the youth team and develop them into first team regulars (and hopefully stars).

I'm looking forward to rubbing it in to the Gooner I know, who texted me last night laughing at his appointment. He will regret this when we win the league in 3 years time! (y)

Rafa was my first choice...knows the premiership already, has been successful in the premiership too and I thought he would have been a great appointment.........

Poch was probably my 3rd choice ( 2nd being FDB)...he is a big improvement in Dimbo in every department for me....I do believe he needs to be given lots of time, and given that I also believe he will get the best out of our players and bring back the glory days....Welcome to the lane Mauricio!! It's all well him fitting the brief for youth development and attacking football, but will he get the points on the table? Will be make us strong enough to be top 3? That's our ambition. Anything less than top 3 will be shit!
Are we going to actually go for the title with this guy? If we finish 5th will he last?

I feel underwhelmed to be honest, but then again, I was feeling gutted when we signed Redknapp. And look how good it turned out to be.

I am a bit concerned by two things: that this guy seems to be hopping from one club to another and that he has not really managed a club with aspirations for the top 3-4.

He may well turn out to be a great manager for us - I really hope he will. I like how he behaves in public, I couldn't stand Sherwood's antics.

In any case, Levy must give him time and decent financial backing. Unless we are in a relegation battle, he must give him at least 2 years to implement his ideas.

We hear a lot about the credit he gets for promoting an attractive brand of attacking football and a high pressing game but I am concerned about his defensive credentials, Soton didn't look very secure at the back and that is one of our glaring weaknesses that quickly need to be addressed.

Whilst he surely can't be as bad defensively as our last Argentine manager / coach he clearly needs to be sorting out our problems in this area very quickly, he needs to be give a shed load of dvd's to study of our defensive lapses, and he needs to understand why one simple ball over the top almost always seems to leave the opposition with a real chance to score against us and this also includes understanding why we panic when the ball is put it on our penalty area and we seem unable to consistently clear it effectively, and additionally if he doesn't come to the conclusion before the season starts that we need an immediate upgrade on our first choice left back position then I will be very concerned. He should also realise that Naughton should never be deployed as cover at LB and he should also try to avoid thinking that the default first resort position is deploying Vertonghen as a back up LB.

If he gets time, unlikely at Spurs,
it could be the start of something good.
Like what I saw at Southampton
and his footballing philosophy in general
but will it be successful enough, quickly enough
for not only Levy but us supporters too.
I would have backed Donald Duck if he'd been appointed,
well SpongeBob anyway.
Five year contract should mean exactly that.
Unlikely in football today and at Spurs in particular.
New Stadium next on the agenda and generate some income.

I went for the goat as I have a bad feeling on this. I can't explain why, I just do.

But before I get too many 'Wot you onabouts!' this is a good thing as every game we've played where I've had this feeling, we've won.

Without fail, every game.

Fingers crossed it stays the same, but I'm sure you'll all forgive me for staying just a little dubious.

For the good of the club of course..........
