Am I bad for finding this very funny

Troubled football idol Paul Merson has been made homeless after gambling away the roof over his head.

The former millionaire, who once earned £20,000 a week, has been forced to quit his plush £300,000 flat and move back into his parents' ex-council house after failing to pay his mortgage.

Friends say the addict is a mess and has squandered his wealth on gambling, drinking and womanising. One said last night: "Effectively, he's homeless. It's so bloody sad.

At the age of nearly 40, considering all he's done and all the money he's earned, he's gone back to square one and the house where he was a teenager.

"Merse is still earning money from Sky Sports and on the after-dinner speaking circuit but he just squanders it on his addictions. He drinks, he gambles, he womanises. He's an addict in a mess. He's living hand-to-mouth."

Today Lloyds Bank will go to court for an order to repossess the former England midfielder's property.

Merson, 39, who first admitted his addictions 14 years ago, went bust last April after failing to keep up £900-a-month repayments on his £40,000 Range Rover.

The Sky pundit was declared insolvent and agreed a deal to pay off his estimated £150,000 debts over several years.

His repossessed flat in upmarket Four Oaks, West Mids, is now set to be auctioned by Lloyds but is unlikely to reach full value, leaving him with more debts.

Father-of-five Merson is still supporting his first wife Lorraine and the couple's three teenage boys as well as second wife Louise and their six-year-old twins.

Friends also believe he still has substantial gambling debts.

After last April's court hearing, he said: "I'm not bankrupt, I never have been and never will be - but I admit I came close.

"I was offered bankruptcy but refused because I was determined to pay off my debts myself - the noble way."

Merson first left his family home in Northolt, Middlesex, more than 20 years ago. He went on to play for Arsenal, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and Portsmouth - winning the FA Cup, European Cup Winners' Cup, league title and league cup plus 21 caps for England. But despite wealth and fame, he soon developed addictions to alcohol, gambling and cocaine.

He once admitted blowing £7million on his addictions and maintenance settlements to his ex-wives.

The flat should come up for auction, then, at a decent price.

Would love to profit from the guy's misfortune.

S'funny, i wanted to say he looked rough the other night on Sky, when he was in with Jamie R doing pre and post match - stubble, mumbling, looked confused on the odd occasion, but i just figured he had had a few complementary glasses of bubbly with the execs...

does he not work at the Woolwich at all as a matchday host or anything?

lot of ex-players earn a fair few bob doing that, surprised he doesn't - maybe his ongoing problems have reached the club and they don't want to risk it, who knows...

I do think it's a bit low of you lot saying he's a twat and everything - yeah, he's got problems but i doubt, if any of you were in that situation, would see it the same way. Doubt many of you would react the same if it was a headline with the name Gazza in it, and there have been times when it's been pretty close.

One of his main problems, in fact what i might consider the source of a lot of his failed attempts at getting on the wagon, is the fact he is such a womaniser and he still lives on his image - those same issues that have caused him so much misery have also bought him a lot of popularity, i'll bet.

Long way to fall - i hope he has the constitution and the motivation to get himself sorted this time, i really do.

Yep, poor Paul Merson. Got a chance in a lifetime to earn the kind of money and live the kind of lifestyle most of us will never see and he blows the lot :violin:

Even after his Berbatov rant the other night (****) I'd still rather sit and have beer with him than mary poppins wankers like Shearer and Linaker.

He's a fuck up, but I bet he enjoyed living his dream more than the monosylabic, dullard wanker shearer. And even though he is a gooner I'd still generally rather listen to his knockabout bullshit than Shearers bore you to teers whinings.

He's a ****, but he's quite a likeable ****.

I like Merson. Hated him as a player, but he has really grown on my as a pundit and comes across as a decent bloke.
Most ex arsenal players slate us and are completely biased, but he always give a very honest opinion and I like that.
Laughing at his misfortune isn't fair, bloke has addictions, he has suffered with them throughout his career, hope he gets through it personally.

Nothing like laughing on a guy when he is down though to make yourself feel good eh....

I say good luck to him and hope he gets through the financial difficulties, as I am sure most of us understand how tough things get when going through a bit of finance bother, I certainly know how stressful it is and I wouldn't want anyone to go through it.

Errrrr, sorry I cannot agree with you. He's a dick, plain and simple, and living beyond his means just goes to show what a "big time Charlie" he thought he was...

I can't take any joy in reading that, gooner scum or not. I don't necessarily sympathise, but that doesn't mean I'm going to laugh at somebody who has clearly fucked up. Big time.
