Defoe was outstanding for Sunderland the last 4 or 5 weeks. Probably the difference between staying up and going down. Delighted for him. Honest pro, good guy, good player.

Also feel for Norwich - they weren't far off and of the 3 relegated teams gave it the best shot. With the rub of the green here and there they might have stayed up.

Villa - you can't say anything other than the worst team in the league and well deserving of relegation.

Newcastle - The lion's share of the blame (on the footballing side) goes to Steve McLaren. They were so, so, so bad while he was there. Yet another abject, abject failure for him. He's a nice man, but my God you'd need your head examined if you let him anywhere near your club. For that, Ashley deserves all the criticism going. Considering how atrocious they were for pretty much the whole season before Rafa showed up - and only sporadically better after that - they are well deserving of the drop IMO.

I don't feel for Norwich - it's fine for Alex Neil trusting the majority of the guys who got them up, but if he thought Cameron Jerome and Lewis Grabban were going to score enough goals to keep them up he was insane. History shows that promoted teams need to find a proven scorer from somewhere, whether you've got to buy, beg, borrow or steal them.

Big Sam just doesn't do relegation. Wow. Aston Villa and Newcastle relegated in the same season.

Hard to see them both coming straight back up, but Newcastle has a chance if they keep Rafa in charge.

Jerome really is a fucking horrendous player, not anywhere near PL quality.

He's shit but he's strong and mobile - so if you could find an ageing pedigree goal scorer who's legs have gone a bit he might have been a decent foil for him. But asking him to score - nonsense.

No chance of that, he's got too much sense. However, I agree I could see them coming straight up if they get a canny manager in place and bring in a few young hungry players. As for villa, I see nothing but a rapid plunge into the lower leagues followed by possible winding up and dissolution.
