Riise clears £82,500 a month which is a hell of a lot of money, but remember he's been taxed a massive £55,000!

The government must be loving all these ridiculously paid footballers in the country.

That figure included wages for Henry and Ljungberg, who were the biggest earners at the club.
henry was the biggest earner, but gallas was 2nd (now first). and the sale of henry and ljunberg knocked 200k a week of their wage bill but they also added another 100k with eduardo, diarra and sagna. then you have huge automatic raises built-in for players like cesc. soon to be increased earnings for players like hleb. arsenal will most likely have a wage bill for the 2007-08 season that is similar or higher than the 2006-07 one.

Sky News says the payslip was genuine.

Liverpool Football Club has launched an investigation into how a star player's payslip - showing a monthly salary of £139,634 - ended up on the internet.

The document shows Norwegian John Arne Riise's net pay, his home address, national insurance number and other personal details.

The payslip - an ordinary payslip that even has a column for student loan contributions - has appeared on a series of football fans' forums.

A Liverpool spokesman said: "We are taking the matter extremely seriously and we are investigating."

Riise, 27, receives a basic salary of £120,000 and his April payslip reveals he was paid £4,000 in appearance bonuses and a £250 "points bonus".

The Kop ace also landed a Champions League salary increase of £15,384.

His take home pay was £82,413 and his monthly tax payment was £55,508. Bizarrely, £65 was deducted for meals.

Several Liverpool players' homes have been broken into during the last 18 months but Riise's home was not burgled.
A club insider said it is unknown how someone obtained the payslip.

He said: "It must have been stolen but the player simply doesn't know how it has happened.

"I can assure you that John Arne Riise is not in the habit of throwing payslips out. It's clearly been stolen and taken without his permission."

I was half in the mind that it wouldn't be hard to knock up a payslip with a famous name on it, but i guess that kinda dispells that

2) The market dictates levels of pay, football generates huge amounts of money, surely it is only fair that the stars of the show get a fair chunk of it.

I am not sure what side of the fence I am on tbh.

Plus a footballer has a very short career in which to set himself up for retirement - most don't have any other relevant skills to fall back on later in life and there's always the threat that an injury could end their career at any moment.

The wages are ludicrous, but that's just the way the game is now - if my company was turning over the sort of sums Premiership clubs do, I'd want a pretty fat wage slip too for helping to earn it!
