Questions on notice?

Mr Comolli, could you please clarify what your role is at the club? What responsibilty do you take in regard to the club's dramatic decline in fortunes? As Mr Levy has previously described your role as a conduit between Board and the manger/squad do you believe that you could have averted the recent crisis, or that your actions, or lack thereof, might have contributed to the problem? Do you take any responsibility concerning the much publicised difficulties between you and the previous manager? Some of the criticism of you seemed to imply that your decisions concerning recruitment were made on the basis of potential rather than immediate benefit to the team, can you comment please? The new manager arrives bringing some of his coaching team with him. Given that the Director of Football at his previous club is so highly rated, are you concerned that there may be a wider plan to replace you?

You clearly have a strong sense of purpose, would you describe that as inclusive of alternative views? On a more general level, how would you describe your problem solving skills? For example, how do you respond to criticism?

sori....where'd he go? Guess we'll never know.

Poyet translated everything and Levy wasn't there.

Marcos Whatshischops speaks pretty good English and at the end Juande said (in english) he communicates with the players in english but prefers talking to the media in Spanish...

Pretty standrd press conference to be honest but im feeling confident :)

I don't think levy was there(they didn't show him anyway). No major news coming out of the press conference. Ramos spoke a bit of English towards the end. He said the players can understand him perfectly but wanted the press conference to be in Spanish. Alvarez speaks some English aswel

That was funny, he did the whole interview in spanish then the last question was about him learning english, he spoke very good english in my opinion, he told the media he prefers to speak to them in spanish but the players understand him perfectly well.

As I understood it, Comolli translated everything, not Poyet. Poyet got a little shirty when asked if he was employed as a translator and I thought he referred to the fact that Comolli was translating. Also I did not detect any lisps in the translations, but there were plenty when Poyet spoke!

However, since at no time did the camera show the translator, I could be wrong.

Sounds like a good plan. If his English isn't top-notch and he mis-translates, then he could provide the wrong answer to the question or provide a reply that is too ambiguous or wrong. They are probably just playing it safe it seems.

Alvarez had very good english, so everyone can stop saying poyet is there to be a translator first, and coach second. I find it hard to understand poyet anyway, his accent is too strong.

Thankfully im fluent in spanish so i didnt need to listen to him. Though i thought it was comolli doing the translations anyway?

Im sure within a few months Ramos will speak better english, its wont be a problem, Cos when it starts shouting at are lazy 60 minute a game players they will know he aint happy and start to work harder.

Rafa spoke no english when he went to liverpool so im sure it will be fine

And hopefully the only Spanish we'll need to know is:

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLL!

That means 'goal'.
Obviously.

Yup, as others have said, there was no breaking news. What we did learn was:

i) that Comolli speaks fluent Spanish - assuming he was the offscreen translator;

ii) that the fitness coach Marcos Alvarez speaks near-perfect English, with a clearer accent than Poyet - so the players will have no excuse when he sez "drop and give me a hundred, you 'orrible little man";

iii) and that Ramos has a definite presence. He was quietly surveying the room throughout. And when he said, in English "I speak to the players in English and they understand me perfectly", there was a steely but charming undercurrent.

OK - I'm looking on the bright side, but for a non-event it was interesting.

That's not true. Benitez spoke some English when he arrived. In fact he has never used a translator.
Ramos is articulate when talking in Spanish but he is 53, a bit old to learn well a foreing language as different from Spanish as English is, but some people manage.

after 2 years there is a purpose for comoli to be our new glorified translator. Maybe thats why Levy hasn't sacked him yet
