Eye opening article comparing the numbers £ 6.6m FA cup vs £40-60m for CL last 16
http://www.espn.co.uk/soccer/blog/m...r-champions-league-do-matter-more-than-fa-cup
Craig Burley is idiotic, remembering he played for Chelsea before they had money!
Making 1/4s of CL brings another €10.5m in prize money alone (again before other income like sponsorship) vs £3,6m for winning FA cup( less than getting knocked out in CL play offs)

Another thread of: "Top 4 isn't a trophy" vs "We need CL to progress and get the best possible players". Followed by discussion about Enic and Levy's ambition and how it's all going to go to shit.

Not a slight at you OP, the figures are an interesting read.

Point is if you are running football as a business, getting CL football is the imperative to sustain a club with a bigger budget, not winning low income trophies that would tradionally define a big club. The romance of the FA cup has been relegated by global TV demands. Simon Jordan made a good point on Talksport that it needs to be remarketed.

I couldn't agree more. I was just alluding the fact that there's the same discussion daily and that it's a polarizing topic, because a lot of fans would take a trophy over CL, a lot wouldn't. Some demand both and level the blame at Levy's door (which inevitably is countered with the new stadium argument). "We need to be patient" will be chucked out on page 2 or 3, which will be met with "We've not won a trophy for 10 years". It just goes around in a circle.

Well, if this thread isn't going to become the same discussion that's going on all over the place with regards Spurs specifically and it's more aimed at the general state of the game financially, then we can always more this over to the General Football Forum. Lets see.

I think this is an issue for all clubs to be honest. Even the ones who don't "need" the money like City. If they want to establish themselves as a big club and built their "brand"/following around the world, then getting to e.g. the CL semis is much more important than winning a domestic cup regularly. If City want all the kids in China, Saudi, the US etc. etc. to buy their merchandise or whatever then being perceived as a big glamerous CL club is essential to that, whereas hardly anyone in those places probably gives a flying fuck about winning the league cup or not.

I'm not saying I like it and I'm not saying it's right, but that's just the way it is nowadays at the top of the game.

Give me 60m over 6m every time for a business

Now if we were a football club that might be a more difficult decision

So near and yet so far in the last 10 years

Gone are the days of transition. We are now in the days of infrastructure investment

So romantic

What sort of team would sack off a Europa League Thursday Competition in order to qualify for a Europa League position ?
