OP has a point though, regardless of the result saturday Toby ain't staying, dembele ain't staying, can't say with any certainty eriksen will stay, ditto Poch.

Those players will need replacing. A CB, a top class CM and creative AM are must this jan/summer

That's not to mention positions like GK, RB, LB and DM really need upgrading if we're to genuinely challenge for major honours.

Like Ferguson and Wenger had to do several times, Pochettino stands before his first moment to rebuild his team.
Some players getting too old, injury prone and others ready to move on. Alderweireld, Wanyama, Dembele and Eriksen will take some serious recruitment to replace. It's exciting too and can make us stronger. A lot talk about not being allowed to build on what we got, which is a point, but it will also refresh a team.

Of course, it's also a time where it makes sense to move on for a manager too ..

Llorente and Vorm both need to be replaced with homegrown players. There are roughly 4,931 English strikers that could do what Llorente does for us. I'm tired of hearing about the homegrown quota.

A lot of condescension towards the OP but there is a certain truth to it. We all know that Dembele and Vic are done, so going on that I think most agree we need two new midfielders. Beyond that, Llorente is clearly not a viable alternative to Kane so a new back up striker is needed although we can maybe just about get buy with Son as an alternative. Then there is the Toby and Eriksen situation which is extremely worrying. Although it's by no means a sure thing, I will be extremely surprised if both these players are still here next season. Replacing those two will be almost impossible. On top of that I personally don't think Davies and Trips are good enough but there is no chance we will be able to look at strengthening there.

Considering how we struggle to improve our squad with just one player, I really don't know how we will manage to replace 5 players. And that's not taking into consideration how impossible it will be to find a player (that Poch likes) that can even slightly replicate Eriksens role in our team.

I'm not trying to be all doom and gloom, but I do think not strengthen last summer is going to put us in a really tricky situation come next summer, especially considering the man holding the purse strings. At the moment we just really have to hope Eriksen and Toby stay.

Bold - Players that will have to be named in the 25.
Italic - Non-HG players.

Lloris
Gazzaniga

Aurier
Trippier
Walker-Peters
Sánchez

Foyth
Vertonghen
Rose
Davies

Dier
Wanyama

Skipp
Sissoko
Winks

Lamela
Lucas

Dele
Son

Kane

Any 11 players sensibly selected from that is good enough to beat half the league, it's a seriously good group that needs quality over quantity.

1 top quality, experienced, passing DCM.
1 further AM rotation option.
A young CB if there isn't someone ready to step up from the academy.

Further, we could ship out one of Aurier or Trippier, use one of the plethora of U23 'keepers as our 3rd choice there, and get young Troy Parrott fully involved with the first team to take Llorente's place.

How do we know that Wanyama's done? He's only just about to have surgery on the injury that's kept him out all this time!

Also, our problem last summer was that the squad is too large. There's no way we're looking to "replace" 5 players.

I'm sure many people thought it would be impossible to replace King and Modric and Bale, but here we are with a team competing at a higher level than those teams of the past.

The thought of replacing Eriksen is certainly a daunting one but is by no means beyond us. Remember that we managed to buy Eriksen in the first place. He has become a world class player during his time at Spurs for sure, but there's nothing that says we can't unearth the next emerging Eriksen or that we won't be able to buy a more established player in his position.

I think it would be a huge shame if Toby leaves but we have already had a season of Sanchez playing ahead of Toby anyway so I don't think that's too much of an emergency. We will need extra cover if he leaves, but I don't think we would need to buy a 50m CB or anything like that.

We've got one of the best "cores" that we've had for a very long time, and in theory the new stadium will be an added incentive for top quality players to stay/join so we are looking at the best position of recruitment that we've had for a long time. It's a challenge for sure, but not something that we need to worry about in my opinion.

The only 3 of significance that may leave the club in the next 7 months are Toby dembele eriksen. Dembele we basically know will go and a replacement will be bought. The other 2 fingers crossed. But if anyone of significance leaves they will be replaced. The club is bigger than any player.*

*Apart from Kane eriksen dele and Son ?

Saying that I think it will be a busy 7 months my guesses who will leave are one of trippier/Aurier Alderweireld Vorm wanyama dembele llorente Nkoudou janssen Onomah Ccv. And I’d guess 4 or 5 in.
It's knee jerk because you are worried about something that may or may not happen.

I'm sure that those who run the club know what they might or might not do to make our team better in those transfer windows you refer to.

If our team wins the quadruple* then we cannot ever beat that.

*unlikely but I ain't losing sleep over it.
Our most experienced players (bar Hugo) are all either incapable of playing regularly OR for one reason or another not willing to sign new contracts. Eriksen, Jan, Toby, Dembele and Wanyama are the ones in mind to be clear. Timing of the article was due to the window reopening tomorrow. Im assuming that Aurier, Nkoudou, Llorente, Jansen, Vorm, CCV and Onomah will also leave to seek more regular football which probably suits them and us. I make that 12 in total i,e half the squad.

The problem is that for the most part (Wolves the other day excepted) Eriksen knows his game, and how to run a midfield perfectly. It's taken him time to learn it, and he was a different player when he came here, to the one he is now.

We could probably afford to get someone in with similar characteristics and potential, but to replace him with someone who's got the skills, experience, and know-how will be impossible in the budget we shop at, even if we get a tidy sum for him.

Agree, the original poster imo got Vertonghen wrong and imo hopefully eriksen wrong. However the squad(not the first 11) is needing a huge rebuild.

We are due to get rid of:
Llorente
Janssen
Nkoudou
Wanyama
Vorm
One of Trippier or Aurier

Meanwhile these players future's dont look secure
Alderweireld
Dembele
Rose(given injury record)

Its not crazy to think we will lose 8 players this summer, now other than Toby, it won't effect our first 11 as we have been without a lot of these players this season. We will need to rebuild our squad regardless

What did I get wrong re Verts? The extension runs until summer 2019 IIRC so I believe he has 18 months left.

Personal take on it is that most players and their agents know we can pay higher wages once we get into new stadium so are holding off on extensions until Levy is happy to loosen the purse strings.

Hopefully if we can get into new stadium early Feb we can blow them away with the atmosphere and make them realise this is where they want to play long term (y)

how much are we looking at for eriksen with one year left on his contract? 60m?

vertonghen's situation seems to have flown under the radar too, no different to alderweireld's except that there's no release clause come the summer. it probably wouldn't be worth it to us to sell a 32 year old so will probably walk free at 33, by which time sanchez and foyth will hopefully be ready as 1st choice pairing going forward.

Need to address CM, DM, LB, RB, backup striker and bring in a HG gk in the immediate future if we have legit ambitions to compete. Otherwise we can continue to march on with Davies playing 75% of games, our RB situation, running Kane into the ground, having Winks and Sissoko play every game, etc. with Poch working magic and keeping top 4 alive until he gets sick of the situation and moves on.

Losing Toby is going to be a real kick in the nuts should that come to fruition and don't even want to think about replacing Eriksen.

I think people are having a hard time with the idea of replacing people. Thing is, that isn't something Spurs have done with immediate like for likes.

It's been built and nurtured, the same for the foreseeable future, we're not elite yet.

Players with less than 18 months on contract (open to offers next 2 windows) - Dembele, Vertonghen, Toby, Eriksen, Llorente, Vorm;
Players that rarely play for Spurs (likely to be moved on next 2 windows) - Nkoudou, Jansen, Wanyama, Aurier;
Perennial loanees (probably not good enough) - CCV, Onomah;

Which leaves: -

Goalies - Lloris, Gazza
Defenders - KWP, Trippier, Rose, Davies, Sanchez, Foyth
DMs - Dier, Winks, Skipp, Sissoko, Amos
AMs - Lamela, Dele, Son, Moura,
Strikers - Kane

Im concluding that next summer could be VERY active given all of the above (feel free to correct me on any of the detail), the optimist in me thinks we will be in a position of strength while the pessimist worries that it might coincide with the arrival of a new coach/manager.

Get ready for Daniel Levy's cheap and cheerful Tottenham squad lad. Its a no brainer.
