This is a massive mess up of a decision to let Qatar to host the World Cup. A country that has barely a football background. Of course every country hosting it wants to draw tourism and more money but it seems this country only want that. Look at Brazil for example, the fact the country is getting the world cup and having the chance to support their own country is worth a lot more than money to some.

In my opinion FIFA should look at the decision to give Qatar the World Cup and try to over turn it which most likely they can't. Will cause more problems for what it is worse. What happens to the Premier League calender that year? If its held in the winter will there even be a winter transfer window?

FIFA have majorly screwed up here. Doesn't take a genius to realise how warm it would be over there before they actually gave them the World Cup?

Does anybody know if there's been any reactions from the uefa FA's towards boycotting a winter world cup? I can't imagine that any of England, Germany, Spain, Italy, Holland, France (& a few others) are happy with that arrangement. A WC without them wouldn't really be a WC for the fans or the sponsors.

I doubt there will be any talk of a boycott. The FAs probably make a fair amount from being in a world cup themselves so it's not really in their interests.

Really is batshit crazy though. If it was going to have to be a winter world cup, why wasn't that in the initial fucking proposal?!

Because they never would have gotten it. Instead they filled the committees minds (and pockets?) with this absurd idea of an outdoor air conditioned stadium.

He added: "The Fifa World Cup must be a festival of the people, but, for it to be such a festival, you can't play football in the summer.”

“You can cool down the stadiums but you can’t cool down the whole country and you can’t simply cool down the ambience of a World Cup. The players must be able to play in the best conditions to play a good World Cup.”

Hey dumbasses, maybe you should have thought about that before giving them the World Cup.

I seem to remember hearing that if they were to change to a winter World Cup then it would interfere with 3 seasons of the European league. One would be bad enough but 3? Can't see how the European leagues would agree with that

You think the European leagues will throw a fit, wait until the IOC steps in! Winter Olympics have enough problems getting attention. Throw in the biggest event in the world right before...

UEFA have said they are willing to restructure the European competitions to fit in a winter World Cup but I can't see how the FA could do the same with English football without having a knock on effect on following seasons. Last season we had about 10 league matches and two FA Cup ties over December and January. You've also got the League Cup quarter-finals and both legs of the semi-finals over the same period. You can't extend the season too far beyond May as the qualifying rounds of European competitions starts in July.

That's the be all and end all of it.

I hope the whole tournament is a fucking shambles that goes down in history as the biggest mistake in sporting history (or at least a close 2nd to Liverpool signing Andy Carroll).

Some good news - FIFA and UEFA have lost their court battle with the UK Government over the World Cup and Euros being on the UK's list of events that has to be shown on free to air TV.

Because it is the World Cup. We should be looking at growing the sport across the globe.
Not that I disagree with that point...football is massive across the globe. The numbers one sport in the majority of the countries and growing rapidly in the countries it isn't like NA, China, India etc.

Short of it declaring itself as the only sport in the universe, it would be difficult for it to be more popular globally.

Your point about the ME, and those other areas/countries above is valid of course. It would be great if football wasn't just a minority sport in some countries. The WC being plonked there for the benefit of multinationals to earn obscene amounts in tax-free advertising orgies will do fuck all in helping the game grow though. It'll peak interest for it's duration undoubtedly. After that though, it will quickly be forgotten about and wrestling/table tennis/badminton/road apple stick hitting/handegg/bouncy bouncy ball/archery as the established national sports will consume all again without the individual countries associations investing in grass roots football.

It's nice for Schweppes and IBM and Adidas et al to coin it in for a few weeks and the worldwide bookies will make a fuck-ton of money. But otherwise, the Qatar WC will leave an even more pathetic legacy than most WCs usually do which will be some achievement. It's not going to be like we can even ignore the real reason for the WC anymore by looking at the backdrop of a traditional footballing country or one which is enthusiastically embracing the game and a fertile breeding ground for future growth. It's going to be played in giant fucking glasshouses amidst a population who couldn't care the tiniest bit about it. This will do nothing to grow the game in Qatar or elsewhere it needs growing in the ME.

Let's just get this one out of the way and pretend it never happened. It'll be a managed fiasco at best with everyone wearing saccharine smiles throughout. Everyone that matters, including the FAs will get their cut. This WC, more than any other I can remember, will most certainly not be a celebration of football. Just greed and corruption, at least it will utterly naked and visible this time.

Finally, a legacy befitting FIFA, especially one led by Sepp Blatter.

Just out of interest riggi, why would you want to go to saudi arabia when the world cup is in Qatar?
