I honestly don't understand the outrage at anything that Qatar did to obtain their WC. It was no different to any other WC bid for the last few decades. In fact every WC bidding process since Italy in 1990 has been investigated or implicated in some kind of financial irregularity. And I would guess corruption was rife before that, but was much easier to hide. Germany's successful 2006 bid was allegedly bollocks deep in corruption.

And we can't blame FIFA/Blatter for all of it. FIFA didn't force anyone to bid or act corruptly. Sure, they created an environment in which it could flourish, encouraged and facilitated it's members taking part in it, but the countries themselves were happy to play the game if they got what they wanted.

To be fair to FIFA and Blatter, the one thing he did do was introduce a one nation, one vote system, which at least gave everyone a fair crack at the corruption gravy train, which is far more egalitarian than real politics. Why shouldn't the South Africa's and Qatar's get a fair crack at the corruption lolly?

I sincerely hope the Qatari WC goes ahead and is a complete farce, which serves as some kind seminal event that makes everyone take a long hard look at the system, but I won't hold my breath.

the outrage isnt that they bribed people, its because they were awarded the cup. its a completely inappropriate venue as we are finding out. FIFA should have accepted smaller bribes from the other applicants.

This is exactly why it's so fucking hilarious. This is precisely where a organisation built on greed, corruption and cronyism should take itself. Possibly one of the most inappropriate venues - both in the sporting sense and political one - on planet earth. Which is why it's so fucking perfect and I'm looking forward to it immensely.

It's going to be a brilliant leveller. European footballers may actually die during games. Half time stonings of gays and half naked Brazilian Women fans and semi-finals of Saudi Arabia v Namibia and Iran v Borneo.

turns out they may lose money anyway. they had to give Fox sports a huge break on the US TV rights for 2026 because the 2022 cup is probably going to lose money for Fox since its being played smack dab in the middle of the NFL season. accepting a lesser bribe from the Americans or South Korea for the 2022 cup may have been a better business decision. I agree that its satisfying to see FIFA screw itself over.

Problem is the bribes were not to FIFA but to the FIFA officials most of whom are no longer there so they probably do not care one little bit about that.

Does anybody know what will happen to the football stadiums after the World Cup? I know Qatar is not a big footballing country but neither were the USA. The stadiums built for US94 provided the building blocks for the Major League Soccer we see today. I'm not entirely convinced that this will be replicated in Qatar. ❤

At least a few stadiums will be down sized with the materials going to stadiums in developing countries.
And I think 1 stadium will be dismantled and again given to stadiums in developing countries.

Thank you for your very detailed reply but it makes all the more mind boggling how Qatar managed to win the bid for the World Cup. They are not a footballing country and probably never will be! Even though they will have held a World Cup. England the quintessential footballing country struggle to get one vote even though their are many many stadiums capable of hosting a World Cup.

It isn't mind boggling at all, it's an absolutely classic case of corruption and bribery. Throw enough money at them and they'll give you what you want.

I don't know why everyone is so down on Qatar hosting. I'm looking forward to it. A country that recently lost 3-0 to a team from the Austrian Regional League East is going to be a great addition to the World Cup.

The whole bid was bogus but there were good reasons to give it to them:

1/ fifa want to give it to non footballing countries because they want to grow the sport.
2/ the middle east had to get one eventually. Africa, europe, n america, s america, the far east have all had world cups.
3/ they can easily afford it.

Obviously though there was huge reasons not to give it to them and it was corrupt as fuck. All bids for world cups have been corrupt as fuck though.

A trade union leader has revealed the shocking extent of deaths of 2022 World Cup workers in Qatar.

Qatar has come in for strong criticism over human rights and the treatment of migrant workers.

There are set to be eight stadiums in use for the tournament with organisers desperately trying to get them ready for four year's time.

It is unclear quite how many workers have died in preparing for the World Cup but Hans-Christian Gabrielsen, Leader of Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions, has offered a frightening insight.

"If we were to hold a minute of silence for every estimated death of a migrant worker due to the constructions of the Qatar World Cup, the first 44 matches of the tournament would be played in silence," he said

"The stories of the workers in Qatar are unfortunately not unique. It is the everyday life of hundreds of thousands of migrant workers around the world."

The total of 44 matches is almost the whole of the group stages at a World Cup, with only the final four matches not affected

So almost 4000 workers according to that. Seems reasonable FIFA, hope your pockets are full!

There's no real stomach for it. It seems the whole thing is being ignored, for the most part. Still, as long as that horrendous human being blatter has full pockets.....

It really is crazy how much money can silence organisations. I'm surprised 'progressive' countries like our own are playing a part. I know I sound like a melt, but there's a limit to what one should turn a blind eye to. Especially since this is a leisure / sporting event. It's hardly something that will save millions of people.

Seriously. Anything that fat **** had to do with the game should be redone.

The day Lee Nelson crashed that press conference and started trying to give him money was the day I realised that he was actually a pretty tight comedian once he ditched that awful character. Was that before or after he dropped the nazi golf balls on Trump's golf course presser?

Interesting quotes from Guardiola in a Telegraph article today, he'll manage Qatar in their World Cup IMHO

I can also see Qatar doing a major drive soon to "grant citizenship" to overseas players

During a wide-ranging discussion which included his views on politics, culture and poetry as well as sport the City manager was asked if there was anything as a manager he had not yet achieved and aspired to, such as international football.

Guardiola, who took charge of City at the start of the 2016-17 season, replied: "I would like to be an international manager in a national team.

"Sooner or later, it will happen because every three days I would like to be involved, but a little bit more calm, play more golf... now I do not have time to play.

"So yes, sooner or later it is going to happen, if I have a chance and some international team wants to come 'knock knock' [at my door]. We will see."

Not a bad shout, stranger things have happened and he's massively in bed with them all anyway. Clearly doesn't give a flying fuck about morals and ethics so he's got nothing to lose. The only thing you can lose in that situation is the moral highground and that's long gone for him anyway.Even if they lose every game nobody will hold it against him because everyone will just brush it off as "It's Qatar, look at their squad, what did you expect him to do?".

Trouble is I think he'd be a terrible international manager. He's notorious for being obsessive to the point of madness about players' positioning down to the inch etc. so I don't see how he would manage to get any team to master his system to the level he requires given how little time you have to coach them.

I can see him doing what Hiddink did with South Korea and bascially working with his squad for 6-9 months prior to the tournament, Qatar will probably pay all the players club wages for the duration
