'Royal' families having a dispute.

I raised an eyebrow when the countries getting upset were named. Not exactly known for their peaceful nature, tanks on the street in Bahrain, Saudi we know about, and Egypt has had an attack on Coptic Christians recently.

Meanwhile Qatar, while very very slack with its human rights, tends to prioritise business, research and education overseas. Wonder what this is really about. Qatar has been friendly with Iran recently...

Also worth noting that Oman and Kuwait have not done anything. Maybe it's an oil/gas issue.

Been mentioned in a few places Quatari support for Iran riling Saudi Arabia. Iran SA biggest regional rival.

FIFA really need to pull the plug on this world cup. Us and America could host this fucker tomorrow just give it to one of us and let us all move on.

We could, I dont think the US could without a good notice

They dont have the "soccer" stadiums as of yet

The problem is that fifa wants all stadiums to have roof and most NFL dont have one and they also play on Astro turf

The other issue is that the MLS stadiums are smaller

You do realize that the most attended WC has been in the US, that the US submitted a bid for the 2022 WC with a list of 38 approved venues that are already completed, and the US is almost certainly going to host the expanded 2026 WC (with Mexico and Canada - but the majority of matches (60 of 80) in the US) - in stadiums that are already completed.

That last part is the biggest obstacle to hosting the 2022 WC - nothing to do with stadiums...

The US cant hold a WC on short notice? We held a WWC on 6 months notice like 15 years ago. Pretty sure we can put on a men's world cup on 5 years notice.

I'd forfeit 2026 for a solo WC in 2022. I'd do it in a heart beat. Mexico and Canada might get pissy but they shouldnt have been involved in this bid in the first place, to be honest.

Russia and Qatar need to have their WC's pulled. Wont happen though. Only 2018 would go to England. No chance 2022 would if only Qatar gets pulled. The US or Australia would get that, IMO.

Since the 90's and early 00's FIFA has changed its criteria for the world cup and brought in guidelines for stadiums

Yea you have a lot of potential stadiums but the statement said you can hold a tomorrow, which you cant

You guys could do it in a years time or 5 years as you would need to make changes but seemingly overlooked the reason why you cant do it tomorrow

You dont have the stadiums,

The MLS stadiums aren't big enough and the NFL stadiums dont fit the criteria of having a grass and a roof. At the moment only 2 stadiums fit that criteria the University of Phoenix stadium and possibly the Seahawks stadium.

Now you can put grass pitches in some of your NFL stadiums like the AT&T stadiums but that couldnt be done tomorrow;)

They can lay grass on top of the turn in an NFL stadium and play it after a few days, like the US did for a WC qualifier in Seattle the last cycle. Some stadiums already use grass surfaces though.

However, there are some turf stadiums that I'd love to see hold a match just for the entertainment value even though they are in the middle of nowhere. For example, give a footy match on the smurf turf at Boise State. Just once. Let me see it.

You understand there is no requirement for either a roof or actually even natural grass?

Also, maybe you just missed this - but the US proposal for the 2022 WC (i.e. not the 90's) included 38 approved stadiums - eventually whittled down to 18 out of 12 required. The US has many faults - having enough stadiums and infrastructure to host a WC is not one of them. New White Hart Lane will be the 5th largest stadium in England - it would be the 75th largest stadium in the US.

There are no MLS stadiums under consideration for a WC bid - now, or in the foreseeable future - they are all too small to host that event - and nobody has ever suggested otherwise.

Construction that has already had its issues is now completely stopped because they cant get any materials in the country. Just take it away already, FIFA. You were handed a fucking gift with this. What are you doing?

Where have you got this idea that WC stadiums need a roof?

I've got a feeling we will get this World Cup - No better alternative than the home of football.
The new White hart Lane is bound to be a venue if we do end up hosting this.

The FIFA stadium requirements ;)

It states iirc that stadiums should have a roof from shelter from the weather or to provide shade from the sun

Also states when designing a stadium, if no roof is being built there should be in the very least room/designs for erecting a roof at a later date

In the next 2 world cups, we have 22 stadiums in both bids, all have roofs and grass pitches(some are hybrid)

In the last 5 world cups, we have 2 stadiums that only have a roof on their main stand whilst another 2 have the whole stadium roofed except for one of the Main stands.

So since the last time the US hosted the world cup and to the next potential time they may host it, there have been a total of 64 stadiums accepted for the world cup. Not one of them didnt have a roof at all. A lot of the NFL stadiums have astro turf and no roofs

They could host a world cup tomorrow on astroturf but that wouldn't go down well, just look at the women's world cup reaction, before someone says there is a plastic pitch at Russia, worth noting that is a hybrid system similar to one at WHL but more advanced

FIFA would want invest in to some purpose built stadiums as well, they are all about their "legacy" want some MLS stadiums in there

What about the ones built in Rio? They didn't have roofs. And where is their legacy?

All of them did have a roof o_O

Also the legacy of FIFA is terrible but they point at their shiny stadiums as proof of their legacy
